You know all about the David-and-Goliath angle. You know all about the game-winning shot a few seconds ahead of the final buzzer, the most dramatic in the history of the tournament. You know all about the classic movie it inspired, Hoosiers.

What you might not know about Milan's victory over mighty Muncie Central for the state championship, on March 20, 1954, is the most important thing of all. It's the real legacy that grew from that historic game at Butler Fieldhouse, the one that had the greatest impact on a small town and altered the most lives, for generations to follow.

Plump's immortal shot from about 16 feet, just to the right of the foul line, didn't just win an improbable state championship for the school of barely more than 160 students in the town of barely more than 1,000 people. It lifted the self-image of a student body. Kids who previously wouldn't have even considered venturing out into the world to take on the challenges of college against kids from bigger cities suddenly realized they could compete with anyone. If their classmates could take on a state powerhouse for the greatest prize they had ever seen and win, of all things why couldn't they?

And so 17 kids out of the senior class of 30 went on to further their education, either at a four-year college or at nursing school. That might not sound like many, but it was for a small school in a small Midwestern town in the mid-Fifties, one 40 miles from the nearest metropolis and 80 miles from the state capitol. It was four times the typical number of Milan kids who went off to college. Back then, kids tended to stay home and work on the family farm or find employment with a local business. College was for the more sophisticated kids from the cities.

"It was kind of like the people in Milan had a little spring in their step," said Plump, the only one of six kids in his family to go to college. "It was like, 'You know if this happened, why couldn't we do this?'"

It's impossible to measure the impact of all those kids furthering their education, but it had to be a positive thing for them and their future generations. Long after the cheers of the manic fans among the sellout crowd at Butler Fieldhouse died down, that's the legacy that still echoes throughout the most lives.

Plump turned down Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State to take a scholarship from Butler, where he became the school's all-time leading scorer. Of the 10 players who dressed for that championship game, nine went to college and six of them became teachers and/or coaches. Another eight in the class continued their education, leaving just 13 to find work somewhere. No doubt other students in younger grades were influenced as well.

Perhaps it wasn't just the basketball team's achievement that did it, though. Perhaps the reaction of fans had something to do with it, too. Milan's title not only inspired banner headlines in newspapers throughout the state, it brought unprecedented revelry from people in small towns who related to the achievement.

After leaving Butler Fieldhouse, the players were led on a lap around the Circle – the wrong way – by police officer Pat Stark, something that contrary to the belief of many was not a tournament tradition. The players stayed overnight at their hotel in Indianapolis that night, then attended a Catholic service the following morning as Stark's guest. When they made their way home in the five cars loaned by Milan's only auto dealership, Volz Motors, a caravan at least 13 miles along awaited them along the highway, cheering them onward. They were routed through Shelbyville, where the local police turned on their sirens. They drove through Greenwood, too. By the time they reached Penntown, 11 miles from home, people were walking on the roads toward Milan, making it difficult for the team to pass through. The state police estimated about 40,000 people congregated there; license plates were spotted from Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

The lesson was twofold: you didn't have to come from a big school or big city to accomplish great things, and achievement could bring great rewards.

The Milan players left another legacy, too. They had grown up amid humble surroundings, born into homes without running water and electricity. "Most of the homes had four rooms and a path," Ray Craft said, meaning a path to an outhouse. Gene White, another senior on the championship team, recalls first-grade teachers having to show their students how to use a flush toilet.

They grew up in homes without television, and played basketball on goals attached to barns, smokehouses and poles. Plump even shot at a peach basket, Naismith-style, in neighbor Roger Schroder's barn. They went to Cincinnati, 40 miles away, for major shopping expeditions. The 80-mile trip to Indianapolis, undertaken only for such major events as the State Fair or the state tournament, was a day-long adventure.

So it's little wonder the townsfolk, and even the neighboring townsfolk, were excited by the basketball team's accomplishment. The greater wonder is that the players themselves seemed to keep a level head. Sure, adults loaned them cars and bought them meals, but none of them seemed to suffer from expanding egos. They moved on with their lives, and didn't look back.

Even today, they take it in stride. They have a reunion every year, and some are still invited to make appearances. Plump continues to be asked to make appearances and speeches, and does so gracefully, telling and re-telling the stories as if it's the first time. But they don't go back and watch video of their championship game, nor do they watch Hoosiers, the fictionalized movie of their championship that is regarded as a classic sports movie.

"I haven't watched it in years," White says.

They know the impact, too. It lives on today.

Plump's Shot Has Echoed Throughout Small Towns

Trailing by two with 4.4 seconds remaining, the Pacers — sporting their Hickory jerseys — called timeout to draw up the game's final play.

The Pacers got the look they wanted with Paul George open at the elbow, but the shot went in-and-out as time expired, sending the Pacers to their third consecutive loss, this time a 108-106 roller coaster of a game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Indiana fell behind the Kings early in the second quarter of Wednesday's game against Sacramento, and didn't regain the lead until a 3-pointer from Monta Ellis put Indiana up 106-104 with less than 2:00 remaining in the game.

But the Kings quickly countered with an 18-foot jumper from scorer Rudy Gay, to knot things up at 106.

With the game tied and just 1:00 left, DeMarcus Cousins was fouled by Ian Mahinmi, sending the former Kentucky big man to the line with the game at stake. Cousins sank both, to put the Kings up 108-106. It was a place on the floor where Cousins did a ton of damage on the night, hitting 9-of-10 free throws, including converting on four and-one opportunities. The final two free throws to put the Kings in front turned out to be the game's final points, closing the door on the Pacers' comeback bid.

"It’s tough when you feel there is a bunch of things controllable that made the hole. Not executing well, not defending well, allowing them to get out in transition," said C.J. Miles, who scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting.

With 3:44 remaining in the game and trailing by four, George (12 points, 10 rebounds) reached into the lane of a Kings pass and caused a deflection. The ball was headed towards the scorer's table as Kings forward Rudy Gay and George raced for the loose ball. PG, able to reach around the sprinting Gay, poked the ball off of Gay's leg, and the referees signaled Indiana ball, sending the Hickory-clad crowd into a frenzy.

From there, C.J. Miles sank a 3-pointer to bring Indiana within one point of the lead in a game that the Pacers had trailed in for the entire second half. Despite the team falling behind in the first half, the Pacers came back with force, and brought the crowd with them throughout the final minutes for the exciting finish at the Fieldhouse.

In the first half, the Pacers struggled to contain the painted area as the Kings outscored Indiana 44-20 in the post over the first two quarters. Led by a huge 18-point, 12-rebound performance by DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento staked a 15-point halftime lead, beating Indiana 64-49 as the teams went into the locker room.

"(They are) a fast-breaking team and we didn’t get back in transition," Pacers head coach Frank Vogel said after the game. "We didn’t do a good enough job defending."

But whatever Coach Vogel said in the locker room, it seemed to have a profound impact, because Indiana opened the second half on a blistering 21-6 run. Even when it seemed things weren't going their way, like when George mishandled a dunk attempt leading to a loose ball, all was well for Indiana as Monta Ellis (21 points) calmly collected the ball and put it up and in to cap the 21-6 run, forcing a Kings timeout. As a whole, Indiana outscored the Kings 33-20 in the third.

But unfortunately for the Pacers, despite their furious comeback, it was the little things that came back to haunt them in the final moments, including missing three out of four of their final free throw attempts

The Kings outscored the Pacers 64-44 in the paint and outrebounded Indiana 49-38

The Kings shot just 4-of-23 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc, but hit 51.7 percent of their shots overall

Jordan Hill had yet another strong game off the bench, shooting 7-of-9 from the field for 14 points and five rebounds.

Rajon Rondo nearly had a triple-double by halftime, racking up 11 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds in just 18 minutes on the floor.

"There’s going to be nights when you don’t get calls you think you’re supposed to get. We’ve got to figure out a way to bottle that energy into something else, into energy on the defensive end to help us get into the game or light everybody up." -C.J. Miles

"We just couldn’t get the win; but we’ve got to stay in it and keep playing. We know what we did wrong tonight, we know what we need to change. We actually changed it in the second half; but we’ve got to jump on them in the first half. Tonight was a tough one. We battled back but unfortunately it wasn’t a win." -Paul George

"Our offense works when we get stops. The Pacers are a really good team. They had won their last 10 of 11 games here at home, so it was good to come in here and get a win. Basketball is a game of runs and we were able to get the last stop tonight." -Rajon Rondo

Former Pacers guard Darren Collison was a menace off the bench, pilling up 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting, while passing out five assists. His starting counterpart, Rajon Rondo, totaled 16 assists by night's end, the most any Pacers opponent has posted this season.

After a two-day break for the holidays, the Pacers travel to Minnesota on Saturday, Dec. 26, to face the Minnesota Timberwolves at 8:00 PM.

Q. I was reading your column regarding the Pacers' depth and Frank Vogel, going to a “10-man rotation.” I believe the Pacers should go 15-deep every game and train everybody to play whenever called on, whatever the situation.

Here's where Frank can continue to grow as a coach, in recognizing subtle changes within the flow of the game.  Think about it - if you could run your starters at full blast for 15-20 minutes per game and then bring in 10 subs, 2 units that understand their specific roles, everyone would remain fresh over an 82 game schedule.  I know this sounds impossible, but why not, if we're talking about everyone being an NBA caliber player?

The key issue with younger players is a lack of court time and exposing them to situations when the game is on the line. You cannot expect a player to perform in game situations when they simply don't have the experience. Just as teams are going to a game where everyone can run the court like a shooting guard, or small forward (Small Ball), everyone on the Pacers roster should be able to play this style of game.

Q. Another very solid move by the Pacers (signing Glenn Robinson III).

Would I be off when seeing Vogel play deep rotations with more full-court defensive pressure to go along with increased spacing and balanced scoring? I can see this team running the floor on both ends and rotating 12-14 deep. Might as well have as complete of a team as you can in this league. I love this idea of getting all this talent at a minimum cost while also staying competitive in salary cap. It seems like we're a very flexible team.  We're going to have a lot of fun this year!

Oh yeah, I think the Hickory “pride” jerseys is a perfect idea. Maybe during those games, at halftime, there could be some tribute given to the overall game in regards to the high schools. Maybe one such presentation highlights all the Hoosiers in the NBA, all-time greats and even storied girls teams. Great personnel moves + great marketing moves + excited fan base + talent = chances for a special year.

A. Those are interesting takes regarding the playing rotation, but I think rather extreme.

I get the points you're both making about keeping players fresh and giving reserves experience in game situations, but you aren't going to win many NBA games with your “third string” guys going up against another team's starters, no matter how fresh the reserves are. You always want your best players on the court for as many minutes as possible – that obviously improves  your chance of winning. Fatigue is a factor, of course, so players need a certain amount of rest.

Most teams include eight or nine players in their regular rotation. Frank Vogel says he wants to go 10 deep to account for the fatigue that will come from playing an increased tempo. I've never known a team that went deeper than that. With 15 players under contract, the Pacers likely will send a couple to the D League for part of the season, and a few will have to sit most games (you can only dress a maximum of 13 players for each game). But there will be injuries that create opportunities as well.

Another factor to consider: most “star” players aren't going to be happy playing 20-25 minutes per game.

It will be difficult enough to establish chemistry next season with seven new players and two or three new starters. Playing more than 10 per game only enhances that problem, probably.

Q. I’m not normally a pessimistic person and I’m always a look-at-the-bright-side Pacers fan when it comes to most things. I’ve really liked a lot of the off-season additions and I completely understand Larry Bird’s vision for this team. In fact, I am rather impressed that he was able to transform this team so drastically in one off-season. Yes, he had help with West opting out and a rather easy Hibbert deal, but it is impressive nonetheless.

The one thing that worries is me is the thin frontcourt. I have no problem with Paul George seeing a lot of minutes at the four spot, but what worries me is the lack of experience behind him. Lavoy and Whittington can shine at times – against second units – but can we truly consider them reliable options?

I guess my main concerns/questions are: We’re one injury in the frontcourt away from having very, very limited options and what do we do if this vision Larry has for this team fails?

We’re not in a position to start playing ‘Big’ again with this personnel.

A. I agree, the frontcourt is a valid concern, but not for its size. Talent and experience will be the primary issues.

Larry Bird and Frank Vogel are committed to playing smaller and faster, so I don't see a retreat to halfcourt pound-it-into-the-post-at-any-cost basketball. Lack of size might be a problem defensively on occasion, but they hope to make up for that at the offensive end, with bigger players having to defend them on the perimeter.

It's difficult to project the frontcourt starters at this point. Jordan Hill probably gets first crack at it. He started 57 of the 70 games he played last season at center.
Ian Mahinmi can defend well enough in the middle, but doesn't offer much offense. That's OK, probably, because there will be plenty of other scorers in the lineup. I'm a fan of role players, in fact. They tend to make offenses run more smoothly than when you have five players looking to score. A defensive-minded center could be a good thing.

Myles Turner's development will be a factor, obviously. If he can adapt quickly enough to get major minutes, whether it's as a starter or backup, that will help. I think he can, even at 19, because his shot-making will always be there and he's athletic enough to make up for some of his mental mistakes.

Mahinmi and Turner are each 6-11 and Hill is 6-10, so I think there's adequate size. Beyond them, you have a couple of 6-9 players in Lavoy Allen and Rakeem Christmas, who might struggle to defend bigger centers, but you can't expect too much from the far end of the bench.

Q. I have been a long time Pacers fan. I love all the signings that they have made. But the thing that interests me the most is the years on the contracts. It is nice to have so many players locked up for several years and some on one year prove it deals. Larry has become smarter with the contract signings.

I have two questions. One is regarding the upcoming salary bumps from T.V. deals in the next two years. Do you think the Pacers will go for adding an All-Star player with the higher cap-space? I know there is talk that a small market team like Indiana can't attract a big star, like New York would. But I think a winning small market team would do so. Case in point when we attracted David West in 2011.

The other question is how do the Pacers feel about signing old, experienced players? I remember the Pacers had Sam Perkins for a couple years and on the 2000 Finals team. He was in the twilight of his career, but still contributed in a veteran presence and play-making ability. I was hoping the Pacers would go after Andre Miller in free agency as a back up point guard.

A. I do believe the Pacers will go after “premier” players who fit their needs and style of play when the opportunity is there. I agree with you that the small market issue is not as great as it once was. Social media and network coverage of all NBA games has flattened the marketplace. If a player is looking for national recognition, or endorsements, he can get them in any NBA city. The only cities that have a built-in advantage now are those in warmer climates, but even then they have to win to attract the best free agents. The Lakers didn't get any of their top choices this summer, and the Knicks aren't exactly having to turn away stars.

David West is indeed an example. He wanted to come to the Pacers in 2011, passing up a better offer from Boston. And this year he wanted to go to San Antonio for an immediate shot at a championship, sacrificing a lot of money to leave the Pacers. Greg Monroe had plenty of offers this summer, too, but signed with Milwaukee because he liked their recent trend.

People forget, for a player with a family, or a player not accustomed to living in a big city, a smaller market is appealing. Living in Indianapolis is much simpler and less expensive than living in New York, L.A., Chicago, Houston, Dallas or Miami.

The Pacers have three players whose contracts expire after this season: Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger and Shayne Whittington. Solomon Hill could be a fourth, if the Pacers don't pick up the option on his rookie contract. That should leave room for generous offers in free agency.

As for the older free agents, I doubt Larry Bird would have a problem with it. You mentioned Sam Perkins. Chris Mullin was another valuable veteran on the bench in the 1999-2000 season. They have to be willing to sit out some games, though, and get limited minutes when they do play, and not all of them are able to swallow their pride.

I don't know if the Pacers had interest in Miller or not. He's 39 years old, so that's an extreme age for a point guard.

Q. Looks like this will be the last message prior to the start of the season for the Indiana Pacers.   With today's move by picking up another athletic raw talent like Glenn Robinson III, this should shore up the Pacers 15-man roster.

I like this move because, like nearly every other player, Robinson III comes in with a great reputation and desire to improve. Tom Izzo mentioned that he is one of the most unselfish players and when listening to Glenn in interviews, he compares his game to that of Paul George.

It appears to me that Larry Bird and the front office has focused upon building a team filled with players with associations from being on the same college team with Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill, to cousins Paul George and Joseph Young to Myles Turner and Rakeem Christmas having the same agents and practicing together and so forth. I have a feeling that this team has an excellent opportunity to have great chemistry.

Oh how I wish I could see this team play more often, but being on the West Coast and a student, I'll have to hope that ESPN or FOX Sports will broadcast here or maybe the Pacers can develop a streaming game (even if delayed) that has commercials to offset the costs. Heck, if they provided that this year, they could just sell a ton of jerseys and Hickory/Pacers uniforms from thankful fans.   We all know it's going to be a great marketing year.

If I was a shareholder, I would be accumulating Pacer's stock.

A. I don't believe there was a deliberate attempt to sign players who have existing connections. That's more coincidence than anything. I believe this team will have little or no chemistry issues off the court, but it remains to be seen what happens when the ball's in play.

Q. Maybe it's my antiquated mindset and everyone just worries about players, not positions, but no true backup point or center?

A. I think we're all going to have to update our mindsets about positioning. They're becoming blurred anyway as players enhance their skills and become more well-rounded, and it's even more true for the Pacers if they're going to spread the floor and rely on movement and passing.

I addressed the center position in an earlier question, but it will be interesting how it works out at point guard. I think Joe Young can step in and play quickly. He's 23, atypical for a rookie, and has the athleticism and skills to contribute. Rodney Stuckey has played it as well, although he's more of a scorer than distributor. The same is true for Monta Ellis.

If all they need is for someone to get the ball up the floor and make a pass to initiate an offense, it shouldn't be a problem. They're not going to be structured like the teams that featured Mark Jackson and Jamaal Tinsley at point guard. The ball won't be in any one players' hands that long – at least Vogel hopes that's the case.

Q. Where would you rank Monta signing among high profile Pacers FA signings? Mullin? West?

A. We'll have to wait to get a definitive answer on that, of course. It all depends how well Ellis fits with the current group, and whether he enhances or detracts from team chemistry.

He has the potential to be one of the most significant free agents the Pacers have signed because of his scoring ability, but for now I'll rank David West first. As I've discussed in previous mailbags, his contributions in the locker room were probably overstated, but were understated on the court. He's admittedly an introvert by nature, so he's not the type to make speeches or pound his chest in front of his teammates. He had a presence, and his maturity and manhood rubbed off on younger teammates, but he was most influential on the court. He won games with clutch play, whether it was a basket, an assist, a deflection or a rebound.

Mullin wasn't a free agent signing. The Pacers traded Erick Dampier and Duane Ferrell for him in the 1997 offseason. The Pacers had drafted Dampier with the 10th pick in 1996 because there was concern about Rik Smits' future and they felt a need for a center. A year later it appeared Smits was going to be OK, there were doubts about Dampier's devotion and they needed a third scoring threat, so they traded Dampier for Mullin. It was a good move, as Mullin made significant contributions to Larry Bird's three teams, two as a starter and one as a backup.

It's kind of strange, the Pacers have made very few “significant” free agent signings in their history. That's primarily because they usually built winning teams with successful drafts and trades, and had no room, financially or in their lineup, for a premier free agent.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers announced Monday they have re-signed Shayne Whittington and signed Glenn Robinson III and Rakeem Christmas. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

Whittington, a 6-11, 250-pound forward/center out of Western Michigan University, is entering his second season in the NBA after signing with the Pacers last year as an undrafted rookie. With the Pacers, he appeared in 20 games during the 2014-15 season. He was also assigned to play with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League during their playoff run that resulted in a trip to the NBA D-League Finals. Whittington appeared in five postseason games with the Mad Ants, averaging 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds.

"Shayne has been with us for more than a year and shown us a lot of good things," said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. "He has grown as a player, has improved and we expect him to continue to do so to be a part of what we do. He’s a hard worker with a variety of skills for a big man."

Robinson, a 6-7, 222-pound guard/forward, is in his second season in the NBA after being drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round (40th overall pick) of the 2014 NBA Draft.  He played 25 games with the Timberwolves before being waived. He was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia, with whom he played 10 games. Overall in 35 games as a rookie, he averaged 2.1 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Collegiately, Robinson played two years at the University of Michigan with career averages of 12.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He hails from northern Indiana, where he was named an Associated Press All-State selection at Lake Central High School.

"Glenn comes to us with a set of skills we think will blend in with our team," said Bird. "We expect him to be very good on the defensive end and he can score the ball. We look forward to seeing him improve throughout the year."

Christmas, 6-9, 250, was acquired by the Pacers on July 23rd from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was a second-round pick in June’s NBA Draft. He was selected 36th overall by Minnesota and was traded later draft night to the Cavaliers. He played collegiately at Syracuse where in his senior season he averaged 17.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. In his four-year career with the Orange, he played 142 games.

Pacers President Larry Bird went on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning to discuss the Pacers' new Hickory uniforms that were unveiled last week.

The Pacers even sent Patrick a Hickory uniform, which Danette Paulie modeled on air:

Bird was his usual quick-witted self from the opening moments of the interview, when Patrick asked him how he would look wearing the new uniform, based on the jerseys worn by Hickory High in the classic film Hoosiers.

"I couldn't fit in any uniform right now," Bird quipped.

From there, Bird and Patrick talked at length about the unique importance of high school basketball in the state of Indiana. Bird expressed particular fondness for the days of single-class basketball and shared a few memories from his days starring at Springs Valley High School in French Lick.

"Our gymnasium held 2800 and we used to get 4300 in there," Bird said.

"Indiana basketball, especially in my hometown...it was a big deal."

For the remainder of the interview, Patrick picked Bird's brain on a number of topics, including the modern NBA game, potential solutions to prevent tanking, and the competitiveness of the NBA in the '80s.

Eventually, Bird and Patrick got on the topic of the greatest shooters of all-time. Bird said that he would put reigning league MVP Stephen Curry in the conversation for best deep shooter in history. That prompted Patrick to ask Bird if he would also include himself in that debate.

In addition to himself and Curry, Bird threw a few other names into the conversation, including Chris Mullin (who Bird played with on the Dream Team and later coached in Indiana), Mark Price, and of course, Reggie Miller.

"Reggie hit as many big shots – if you go back and look over the years – as anyone," Bird said.

"Anybody can shoot it when it’s tied, it’s when your down one or down two, how many guys are making that shot?"

Finally, Patrick concluded the interview by asking Bird if he could take his old friend and current Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan in a game of one-on-one. Bird joked that he'd wear a Hickory uniform for the contest before revealing who he thought would come out on top.

"Boy, that’d be a good game," Bird said. "God, I hate to admit this, but he’d kill me."
