David West knows that while it's hard to thank everyone who's been important and influential in his life, he can always help others in honor of those who have helped him.

"One of the things I try to tell young people is that you can pay it forward," says the Pacers forward.

And that's exactly what West and his wife Lesley did for local children and families when they surprised them with a holiday meal, gift cards, and a toy giveaway that had the kids in attendance screaming so loudly West had to halt his speech temporarily.

Along with the gift giveaways, families enjoyed balloon artistry and a chance to have a picture taken with West and Boomer, the Pacers’ fun-loving mascot.

"There are opportunities for you to get better," West said, "and to be greater than what you are today, what you are tomorrow, and ultimately, what you’ll be in the end."

For David West, being greater than what he is today extends far beyond the basketball court, and into a whole different arena: Caring for the community.
