2017 Player Capsule: Metta World Peace

Season Summary
Metta World Peace defied the odds. Two years ago he was given a 50 percent chance of making the Lakers’ roster. This year that was reduced to 10 percent. But the 37-year-old managed to claw his way into a spot both times.

However, his time in purple and gold is now officially over. After six years as a Laker, World Peace was told by President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson that he would not be retained for next season.

By the Numbers
8:
Points scored by World Peace on April 9. He didn’t even play until the fourth quarter but was instrumental in L.A.’s win over Minnesota.

18: Points scored in a win over New Orleans on April 11. World Peace started his final home game at Staples Center but saved all his points for the second half. He also added four 3-pointers and three steals as the crowd went wild during his highest-scoring performance in four years.

27.9: Percentage shot from the field this season. Despite those electric displays in the final week of the season, it wasn’t an efficient season for Metta, who averaged 2.3 points while shooting just 19-of-68 from the field.

What’s Next
World Peace has long stated his desire to play 20 seasons of professional basketball, and he needs only two more to accomplish that goal, be it in the NBA or overseas. Though he won’t be suiting up for the Lakers next year, World Peace would be welcomed back in a different capacity according to Rob Pelinka and Luke Walton, who could potentially find a spot on the coaching staff for Metta if he wanted to transition into a new role.
