Postgame Numbers: Lakers vs. Grizzlies (1/2/15)

Here is a by-the-numbers look at the Lakers’ 109-106 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Seconds remaining when Kobe Bryant attempted a game-tying 3-pointer. The game’s final sequence was a chaotic one, as Bryant hit a 26-foot triple to cut the Lakers’ deficit to one with 24.2 seconds left. However, miscommunication led to L.A. fouling with nearly half that time wasted. After Mike Conley went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, Ed Davis had the opportunity to tie things up with a pair of foul shots, but he missed the second with 2.8 seconds left, and Bryant’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer bounced off the rim.

"You can't really believe that it didn't go in when (Bryant) shoots it," said Memphis head coach David Joerger. "We have all watched him for so many years, and he makes so many great plays. He did that tonight. He hit a tough 3 when Quincy (Pondexter) was right on him. (Bryant) made it over a 6'6 guy and made a tough 3 to bring it back to a one-point game."

Lakers who fouled out. Both Carlos Boozer (14 points, 6-for-8) and Jordan Hill (three points, eight rebounds) reached the maximum six fouls, which required each to leave the game toward the end of the fourth quarter. Fellow big Ed Davis picked up four fouls, and head coach Byron Scott attributed his team’s foul trouble to Memphis center Marc Gasol.

“He puts a lot of pressure on you,” Scott said. “He’s good in the post. He’s good at the elbow. When he tries to post up, he’s a monster down there. As I told our guys, some of our fouls were just reacting a little too late, so we were just a little out of position.”

Rebounds grabbed by Gasol, who led all players. The Spaniard also notched his 10th double-double of the season by pitching in 18 points. Gasol, who leads all centers with 3.8 assists per game, padded this average with five against the Lakers.

Points scored by both Davis and Jeremy Lin. The total marked Davis’ best scoring performance of the season, and it also fell one point shy of Lin’s. The two combined to shoot 16-for-23 from the field, while Davis added eight rebounds and Lin had five assists.

The two leading scorers racked up their points in mostly different fashion. Davis, who entered the game shooting just 49.4 percent on free throws, went 6-for-8 at the line. Meanwhile, Lin pitched in a game-high six fast-break points and scored 12 in the paint, which were second next to Davis’ 14.

Passes made by Bryant, who led all players. The 16-time all-star scored 15 points and nearly reached his third triple-double of the season, finishing with nine rebounds and eight assists. Bryant had one of his best games distributing the ball, as he also dished out pairs of secondary and free throw assists.

“I think he’s doing a great job of facilitating, running our offense and getting guys where they need to be,” Scott said. “Guys are making shots offensively the last three or four games, and we’re shooting the ball extremely well. Our spacing is so much better.”
