Cauley-Stein: From Mentee to Mentor

Sacramento is quickly becoming the University of Kentucky-West.

The Kings are stockpiled with big men from the University of Kentucky with DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein and now Skal Labissiere.

Cousins was the first to come to town in 2010 and has since become a two-time All-Star as well as a two-time All-NBA Second Team member. No. 15 helped pave the way for Cauley-Stein last season – who earned accolades as a All-Rookie Second Team member.

Now, it’s Trill’s turn to help mentor the newest Kings big man from Kentucky.

“He’s like a little brother, kind of like how Boogie is to me, so you get to kind of pass it on,” said Cauley-Stein following Day 1 of Mini-Camp. “It’s cool to have another guy with you at your position and you get to learn together and challenge each other too.”

Skal has a history with Willie; the high-flying Kings forward used to swing by Wildcats practices and shoot around with the team during Skal’s lone season at Kentucky.

“I’ve been around him in Lexington, he always comes back and plays with us,” said Labissiere.

The atmosphere is different now that Skal is in the NBA, but his relationship with Willie hasn’t changed.

“Willie is a pretty chill person. He’s been really good so far.”
