Buddy Quickly Adapting to New Opportunity

This time last year, Buddy Hield was amid a 39-game, double-figure scoring streak with the Oklahoma Sooners.

One of college basketball’s most exciting players, the Sooner-turned-Kings-rookie had been a constant source of awe for viewers and fans alike, continually finding ways to free himself for scoring opportunities. Fast forward to March 2017 and the sharpshooting guard’s abilities are being showcased on a nightly basis at the game’s highest level.

Despite playing in just six contests with Sacramento to date, No. 24’s knack for shot-making has been apparent throughout each game, thriving in isolation situations and catch-and-shoot opportunities.

Since joining Sacramento, in situations considered “tight” defense by NBA.com where a defender is within two to four feet, Hield is shooting 75 percent from the floor. From beyond the arc, No. 24’s specialty, Hield is converting at a 48-percent clip on over four attempts during the six contests. In terms of efficiency, Buddy is boasting a 64-percent effective field goal percentage – an average that sits above the Bahamian’s standout senior collegiate season. Buddy’s true-shooting percentage is an impressive 67 percent – a mark that would rank among the best in the NBA if held for the season.

He’s accomplished all this despite limited practice time and averaging 25 minutes per game in just six contests. Nonetheless, Hield’s scoring ability in Sactown has shown flashes of brilliance and efficiency.

Time will tell if the trends continue. But if so, expect Hield to quickly rise in the NBA’s Rookie of the Year rankings.
