Shots Don’t Fall Vs. Warriors As Clippers Lose Third Straight

Score: GSW 114 - LAC 98

OAKLAND – All it takes is one opposing starter off his game inside Oracle Arena, where the Warriors entered Wednesday night on a 50-game home winning streak, for a team to leave Golden State in defeat.

When only one opposing starter’s in a rhythm offensively, that loss is practically inevitable.

The Clippers largely got the looks they wanted, but outside of DeAndre Jordan’s 7-for-10 night with 19 points and 20 rebounds failed to hit the shots they normally make in a 114-98 loss to the Warriors.

J.J. Redick went 4-for-13 and Chris Paul went 4-for-16, as the Clippers’ top two shooters combined to score 22 points. As a team, the Clippers’ starters not named Jordan combined to go 10-for-34.

“Me and J.J. had a lot of shots we would love to have over again,” Paul said. “They didn’t go down tonight.”

It was a stark contrast from what Paul had done earlier in this season, averaging 27.7 points against the Warriors through his first three matchups this season, the most for Paul against any Western Conference opponent.

Despite the struggles shooting, it was still anyone’s game at halftime, at which point Jordan already had more rebounds than he had total in either of his two previous games (12) and Jamal Crawford had already contributed with 10 points, as the Clippers found themselves trailing by two points.

All that, however, was before Klay Thompson got going.

Thompson had just seven points at halftime but finished with 32, sparking a 20-8 run to begin the third quarter, which pulled the Warriors out to a double-digit lead.

Meanwhile, the Clippers’ stars continued to struggle from the floor. Apart from Jordan, no other Clippers starter made more than four shots in the game. The next leading scorer was Austin Rivers off the bench, who was 6-for-10 with 16 points.

A few brief lapses defensively on switches gave the Warriors all the breathing room they needed. The Clippers made a couple brief runs after the Warriors’ blistering start to the second half but never fully recovered or got within six points of Golden State the rest of the way, as the Clippers’ losing streak stretched to three games and the Warriors swept the season series.

Key Moment: Even the slightest lapses at either end could mean the end on the road playing the Warriors. When both happen, the result is a lethal, as it was the first six minutes of the third quarter when the Warriors turned a two-point lead into a 14-point advantage.

Clippers Star: DeAndre Jordan – He had 17 points and 18 rebounds by the end of the third quarter and finished with 19 and 20, respectively. Jordan was strong on both ends, also blocking two shots. He scored in a variety of ways, finishing with dunks, baby hooks and lay-ins.

Warriors Star: Klay Thompson – He went 7-for-10 from behind the arc, finishing with just one 3-pointer fewer than the Clippers had as a team. The Clippers largely did well containing Stephen Curry, but Thompson continued to find ways to shots off to break the game open.

X-Factor: Stephen Curry – Even on a night he didn’t seem to be the main factor, he still made 12 shots and scored 33 points.

Quotes of the Night:

Chris Paul – “I think it’s going to be tough for us to win if me and J.J. can’t throw it in the ocean.”

Doc Rivers – “I liked how we played, I loved their energy, I thought DJ was the most dominant player on the floor, overall. We just missed shots we normally make.”

Jamal Crawford – “They started that third quarter on fire. We were in trouble after that.”

NOTES: Doc Rivers addressed Blake Griffin’s status again, reiterating that he thinks the forward will be back during the regular season though he couldn’t guarantee it … The Warriors swept the Clippers in the season series for the first time since 1985-86 … Jordan scored at least 10 points for the 12th straight game, tying the longest streak of his career … Austin Rivers’ 16 points were his highest output since scoring that many Jan. 31 against the Bulls … Jeff Green matched a career high with four steals … The game was the first of a back-to-back, as the Clippers return home to play the Trail Blazers …
