LOS ANGELES – NBA analyst Brent Barry knows a thing or two about hitting long-range shots for the Clippers.
Barry spent his first two-plus seasons with the Clippers from 1995-98, hitting 123 3-pointers his rookie year while shooting 41.6 percent from long range.
He spent 14 seasons in the league, thriving from behind the arc, and now sits No. 27 all-time in 3-pointers made. Barry also has an NBA slam dunk title under his belt, which he acquired in 1996 as a member of the Clippers.
Clippers.com caught up with Barry at All-Star weekend for his thoughts on the seasons of J.J. Redick and DeAndre Jordan.
What’s it like to see what the Clippers have become in the years since you played with them back in the late 90s?
BB: “The sentiment that really is fascinating to grasp onto is about how much the Clippers have meant to the L.A. market, as opposed to what the Lakers have fallen into a little bit the past couple seasons. I don’t think there are a lot of people 20 years ago you said that to would say that’s going to happen.”
What have you thought of J.J. Redick’s season this year?
BB: “J.J.’s having a great year. He’s like 47-47-87.”
At this point, Brent’s father, Hall of Famer Rick Barry, walks over and asks who Brent’s talking about.
RB: “Oh J.J. Yeah, he’s been good.”
BB: “If he can reach that 50-40-90 mark…really, the coolest thing to watch with J.J. doing that this year is the timing of it. It was extremely important to, I guess, hold water – there’s a Clipper joke in there somewhere – while Blake (Griffin) was out. So, he’s had a remarkable shooting year building off last year, which was also an incredible season.”
You’re a former slam dunk champion. Better dunker, you or DeAndre?
BB: “For sure, DeAndre Jordan. For my career, I had maybe 12 dunks...I think he had 12 in his last game.”
Even though you won the title?
BB: “Timing is everything.”
