Player Bio

Muscala was born in 1991 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. His parents are Bob Muscala and Mary Maida, and he has one stepsister, Madeline Maida. Muscala was raised in Minnesota and attended Roseville High School. He went on to Bucknell University, where Muscala was a named a 2012-13 Academic All-American. While with Atlanta, he was awarded the Hawks' 2016 Jason Collier Memorial Trophy, which is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the characteristics Collier displayed off the court as a community ambassador. Muscala's nicknames include "Musky" and "Moose". The big center's favorite charities include "Pay Away the Layaway" and "Peacemakers International". He finished as the school's all-time scoring leader (2,036) and was second in blocks (271) and rebounds (1093). As a junior, Muscala was named the 2011 Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Year after leading the Bison to an NCAA Tournament appearance. After his senior season, he was named Patriot League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, as well as AP Honorable Mention All-American. Muscala was also the first player in Patriot League history to twice earn Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors. Muscala was selected 44th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Mavericks before being traded to the Hawks the same day. He then opted to play 20 games in Spain for the RAAA­o Natura Monbus Obradoiro of the Liga ACB before joining Atlanta in February 2014.
