Gordon Daniel Hayward was born in Brownsburg, Indiana. His parents, Gordon and Jody, are both 5-foot-10. Gordon's twin sister Heather was a member of Butler's women's tennis team. Gordon himself played tennis at Brownsburg High School and advanced to the Indiana state singles quarterfinals. At Butler, Hayward majored in computer engineering and was selected Third Team Academic All-American. The forward is very active in the Esports gaming community and has hosted many events. He's an NBA spokesperson for the national #LeanIn campaign. In 2018 Gordon created a line of t-shirts called "Daddy's Always Happy," and a portion of the sale proceeds goes to support the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Gordon Hayward played two very successful college seasons at Butler. The forward was named to the All-Horizon League First Team in both seasons. As a true freshman in 2008-09, Hayward appeared in 32 games (all starts) for the Bulldogs, averaging 13.1 points, 6.5 boards and 2.2 made threes per contest. He was also selected to the FoxSports.com National All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore, Hayward led the Bulldogs to the first Final Four and NCAA Championship Game in school history. He started all 37 games he appeared in, averaging 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds. As many remember, he just missed a half-court buzzer beater to win the National Championship. Hayward was named to the All-Tournament Team, Most Outstanding Player of the West Regional and Horizon League Player of the Year.
