Jayson Tatum agrees to 5-year, $195 million extension with Celtics

All-Star swingman Jayson Tatum has agreed to a rookie max extension, cementing the All-Star forward's future in Boston.

Jayson Tatum earned his first All-Star selection with a breakout season in 2019-20.

Boston Celtics All-Star Jayson Tatum has agreed to a five-year, $195 million designated rookie max extension. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was first with the news.

Tatum was a first-time All-Star last season, averaging 23.4 points on 45% shooting (40% on 3s) while grabbing 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

He led the Celtics  in 3-point efficiency, hitting a team-best 189 3-pointers and ranked first in the league in pull-up 3-pointers, making 124 of 307 (40.3%). His All-Star designation at 21 years and 333 days old made him the second-youngest player in Celtics history to make an All-Star team (trailing only Antoine Walker at 21 years, 180 days back in the 1997-98 season).

He was hot in February, averaging 30.7 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.2 spg and 1.3 bpg to collect Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors. In the 2020 playoffs, Tatum upped his statistics (25.7 ppg, 10 rpg, 5 apg, 1 spg and 1.2 bpg), leading the team in scoring, rebounding and shot-blocking. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference finals, but lost 4-2 to the Miami Heat.
