Pre-Draft Outlook
It’s been a rough half decade for the Wizards, who’ve been no better than four games under .500 in each of the last five seasons, a stretch that cost general manager Tommy Sheppard his job in April. This past season was the second straight in which the Wizards ranked in the bottom 10 on both ends of the floor and failed to even qualify for the AT&T Play-In Tournament. That’s not a good spot to be in when you have a veteran-laden rotation, featuring a player who’s missed 74 games over these last two years and is owed more than $200 million over the next four.
The Way to Go
One reason why the Wizards have a new president (Michael Winger) is that they haven’t drafted well over the last several years. So while they’re not a team of the present, they don’t necessarily look like a team of the future either. There’s nothing that can be done about the past and Winger will need to set a new course for the next 3-5 years. That starts with the No. 8 pick, but also might include parting ways with Bradley Beal and collecting more assets.
