Stephen Jackson Basketball Court Unveilved At Omega Boys Club In San Francisco
April 11, 2008
Before watching teams of local children play on the court for the very first time, Jackson spoke about the court's importance to the local community. Jackson also thanked the Warriors, the Good Tidings Foundation and the Omega Boys Club for helping make the court refurbishment possible.
Additionally, in honor of Jackson’s continued commitment to the Bay Area community, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed Saturday, April 12, 2008 – the day after the unveiling – as Stephen Jackson Day in San Francisco.
“I am very pleased to unveil this beautiful new basketball court in San Francisco,” Jackson said, “knowing that it will have a positive and lasting impact on the young people in this community for years to come. I am also extremely humbled to be recognized by Mayor Newsom and the City of San Francisco. It is truly an honor.”
The renovation project of the court at Omega Boys Club, which was fully funded by Jackson and The Good Tidings Foundation, includes a completely resurfaced playing court (complete with color and striping), as well as the replacement of rims, backboards, poles and a surrounding fence. This project marks the 30th court overall that the Warriors and the Good Tidings Foundation have helped refurbished throughout the Bay Area in the past 12 years.
The proclamation of Stephen Jackson Day in San Francisco by Mayor Newsom reads as follows:
WHEREAS Stephen Jackson is recognized as a community ambassador dedicated to empowering youth and encouraging them to be educated, responsible, and reach their highest potential; and
WHEREAS he strives to provide opportunities for his community so that it is a better place for children to live, learn, and grow; and
WHEREAS Stephen aims to leave behind a solid legacy by donating his time and resources to community endeavors in the Bay Area and in his home town of Port Arthur Texas; and
WHEREAS he leads by example to show his peers the importance of working as a team to nurture the minds of young people and get them excited about the opportunities in their future; and
WHEREAS Stephen takes pride in his responsibility to be a role model, motivator, and leader; his passion to see youth flourish is more important than receiving personal accolades on and off the court; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, do hereby proclaim April 12, 2008 as STEPHEN JACKSON DAY In San Francisco.
