On May 14, 2014, Kerr reached an agreement to become the head coach for the Golden State Warriors.

He opted to begin by coaching the Warriors’ Summer League team in Las Vegas.

After leading the Warriors to a 34-6 (.850) record through Feb. 1 of the 2014-15 season, Kerr was named head coach for the Western Conference All-Stars. He was Golden State’s first All-Star head coach since Don Nelson earned the honor in 1992.

A Dubs’ 123-110 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on April 4, 2015 secured Kerr’s place in NBA history with the all-time record for most wins by a first-year head coach.

The Warriors finished with a 67-15 record in Kerr’s first season, and they worked their way through the Playoffs to the Western Conference Finals against the Houston Rockets. After a 4-1 series win, Kerr’s Dubs made it to the NBA Finals for the franchise’s first appearance there in 40 years.

Down 2-1 in the Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kerr, at the suggestion of his staff, made the decision to start Andre Iguodala over Andrew Bogut in the subsequent games. They went on to win the series 4-2 and claim their first NBA title in four decades.

After missing 43 games of the 2015-16 season to rehabilitate a pair of offseason back surgeries, Kerr returned to the Warriors bench on Jan. 22, 2016. The team went 39-4 after his return, including a victory on the last game of the season to reach 73 wins and break the NBA’s single season win record. He was awarded the NBA Coach of the Year award.

Despite dropping the 2016 Finals to the Cavaliers in seven games, the two teams would meet again in 2017. The Warriors won that series 4-1, making Kerr the fourth coach in NBA history to win two championships in his first three seasons of coaching.

The Warriors and Cavaliers met a fourth consecutive time in the 2018 Finals. The Warriors went on to sweep the series and claim their third title under Kerr, giving him a total of eight Championships as a player and coach.

With a 115-111 win over the Boston Celtics on Jan. 26, 2019, Kerr became the fastest head coach of any major sport to reach 300 wins, needing just 377 games to do so.

Kerr was selected as an assistant coach to the USA Basketball Men’s National Team by legendary head coach Gregg Popovich beginning the summer of 2019.

Though 2019-20 has been Kerr’s first losing season as a coach, he remains focused on developing the Dubs’ young talent: “We just have to adapt as a coach and adapt to your circumstances and continue to work…. We had to focus more on details with these young guys than we’ve had to in the last five years.”
