Wolves Basketball Academy Continues To Help Kids Learn The Game

For Timberwolves and Lynx Basketball Academy manager Steve Brown, getting a chance to work with kids across the Midwest and teach them the game of basketball is more than just practicing fundamentals. It’s about making sure the kids involved are enjoying themselves during the event.

“You try to make it so you get them in the right situation, so they’re all learning,” Brown said. “But mostly they’re having fun, they walk out of here saying, “Gol, that was a lot of fun. I want to come back.’”

Brown and the Wolves’ Basketball Academy was on hand in Fargo last week during the Timberwolves’ preseason opener against the Indiana Pacers at the Fargodome. Approximately 80 kids ranging from ages 6 to 13 were on hand, learning the game on the Fargodome floor before taking in Wolves and Pacers contest later that night.

The kids participated in drills that highlighted dribbling, agility and other fundamentals of the game. But it also allowed Fargo area youth to learn from an extension of the Timberwolves’ organization and, afterwards, take in a preseason game in their local market.

“We have an hour, and then we have an opportunity to do skills and drills, and mom and dad all get to come in and watch the game [against Indiana],” Brown said. “The kids are all excited to be here tonight.”

The Timberwolves Basketball Academy continues to grow each year, and with the extended weekend coming up this week the camp will be holding events in several area high schools—including Andover, Chaska, Chanhassen, Wayzata, Maple Grove, Rogers, Eagan and Minneapolis.

Brown said the program has expanded and now holds camps in the metro, greater Minnesota and in the five-state area.

“Every day we’re getting a chance to influence kids in the right way,” Brown said. “Teach them how to play basketball.”

Brown said part of the excitement around these camps is about learning and having a good time, and part of it is linked to the buzz around Minnesota’s professional basketball teams.

“I will say this, the Timberwolves and Lynx, the success they’re having really helps,” Brown said. “Because a lot of people are really interested and want to be involved.”
