Five Things You Didn't Know About Karl-Anthony Towns
The Wolves drafted Karl-Anthony Towns with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Towns is a player who can play power forward and center. He's one of the best defensive big men in this year's rookie class. He's from Kentucky. Some people call him KAT.
These are things you already know about Towns. We did some real deep digging and found five things that you might not have known about Towns. Enjoy.
1.) Towns attended high school at St. Joseph’s in Metuchen, New Jersey.
The reason why this is important is because the school is responsible for talented basketball players such as Garry Witts, Jay Williams (Duke) and Andrew Bynum. Williams has given Towns advice through his process as becoming an NBA player. Pretty cool.
The most notable student to attend St. Joseph’s, though, was some guy named Jon Bon Jovi.
“It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not.”
… I still don’t know what that means. But whatever. Things have worked out fine for Jon.
2.) His family knows basketball.
Karl-Anthony’s dad, Karl Sr., coached basketball at Piscataway Vo-Tech in New Jersey until last season. He would often bring Karl-Anthony to practice to play against the junior varsity team.
This is when KAT was a fifth grader… So yeah, he was better than all of us when eating Lunchables was still a thing.
Karl Sr. also played college ball at Monmouth University in the mid-80s.
3.) What should we call him?
Towns prefers to be called Karl-Anthony as opposed to Karl. Remember that if you ever see him. He might never talk to you again if you call him Karl. Just kidding. He probably will. If you haven’t noticed, he’s like the nicest dude in the world.
4.) He can do everything.
He’s already enrolled in classes at Kentucky for the fall semester.
“I just took some business-related classes, just to help me out,” Towns told me in New York. “And also get started on the kinesiology degree I want and some anatomy classes as well.”
He’s in the NBA and will probably be a doctor 20 years from now.
I haven’t done laundry for a week out of laziness.
5.) He has an imaginary friend.
He has an imaginary friend named Karlito. Towns says that Karlito helped him during his freshman season at Kentucky.
The freshman described Karlito as a Lil Penny type of character that former NBA All-Star point guard Penny Hardaway had in his Nike campaign. Lil Penny was voiced by Chris Rock and was one of the best things about growing up in the ’90s along with Starter jackets.
Karlito also allegedly gets on Towns for making bad decisions. “Biggest critic I got. Absolute biggest critic I got,” Towns said to reporters after Saturday’s game. “He yells at me for everything.”
Karlito now has a face. And a body. And a Twitter account that has more followers than yours. Chances are we’ll be seeing a lot of Karlito in Minneapolis during the 2015-16 season. Marketing at its finest.
