Roberson Inspires Grit with Youth Campers

In a rush of unbridled joy, a mob of 10 to 16 year olds swarmed the triumphant camper immediately after one of their own converted the basket to claim victory in a fervent game of Knockout at the Thunder Youth Basketball Camp in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. Thunder guard Andre Roberson celebrated with the excited youngsters in a raucous, yet jubilant, scene that capped an entire afternoon centered on defensive drills and techniques—fitting for the rangy wingman’s first ever visit to the basketball camp.

For Roberson, the chance to help shape the mental and physical approach to the game for these young ballplayers in the gym was a satisfying way to give back to the community. During the short breaks in between the camp workouts in which the participants gathered briefly, Roberson emphasized the value of teamwork, effort and resilience.

“I love working with kids. It’s fun to give back and teach them the game,” Roberson said. “It’s great to be out here.”

Roberson’s surprise visit reinforced the agenda on the defensive end for the campers. Learning from the Thunder’s defensive stalwart, these young players not only gained invaluable instruction, but also the opportunity to hone their skills and test their mettle throughout the day.

“Fundamentals—you got to get a great start on that,” Roberson said. “It’s a great foundation to build on.”

“They can spice up their game a little later, but the big thing right now are the fundamentals,” Roberson continued.

The intensity of each camper ratcheted up when they were pitted against each other in a variety of alley drills, where defenders try to stay in front and prevent ball-handlers from dribbling the full length of the court to score. Overseeing the activity, Roberson was quick to cheer great defensive effort and equally prompt to provide encouragement and instruction to the plucky participants.

“On the defensive end, you got to be resilient,” Roberson said. “Slide the puppies. Slide your feet. Keep them moving.”
