PHOENIX – The The Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, in partnership with Grand Canyon University, hosted a “Drive to Joplin” campaign on Wednesday, June 1, aimed at aiding the victims of recent tornadoes that devastated the town of Joplin, Missouri.
Donations were accepted inside the Casino Arizona Pavilion at US Airways Center between 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Fans were encouraged to donate toiletry items including toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, detergent, etc.
Additionally, Phoenix Mercury fans were also able to make donations during the team’s annual open practice on Tuesday, May 31 from 6 - 8 p.m. at US Airways Center.
Any fan that made a donation was entered into a drawing for the chance to win autographed Suns merchandise, a pair of courtside seats to a 2011 Phoenix Mercury home game, and a meet-and-greet with Diana Taurasi.
All items collected from the campaign were personally driven by a GCU staff member from Phoenix to Joplin, MO on Thursday, June 2 and given to the American Red Cross, who then distributed the donations to tornado victims desperately awaiting our help.
