Arizona is home to 22 Tribal Nations. The new City Edition uniform pays tribute to their rich histories and cultures and celebrates their shared love of basketball. As a state with one of the largest urban Native American populations, it was important that the Suns have a uniform that honors the original residents of Arizona who built the state that we call home. The vibrant turquoise uniform and thoughtful design details were inspired by thousands of years of shared characteristics, symbols and traits.
COLOR
The turquoise base color represents the “protection stone” or “living stone.” A color of strength, the turquoise uniforms will serve as the team’s suit of armor.
MEDICINE WHEEL
The belt buckle features the PHX seal with basketball surrounded by 22 feathers inspired by the medicine wheel, a symbol used by Native American tribes to represent the cycles of life and four cardinal directions. The 22 feathers in the medicine wheel represents each of the state’s 22 Tribal Nations.
TRANSLATIONS
The black tape running down the jersey top and shorts includes the word for ‘sun’ in each of the 22 Tribal Nations native languages.
NUMBERS
The inline colors within the number system reflect the colors derived from the medicine wheel and colors from the official seals of all 22 tribes.
PATTERN
A tribal step pattern runs down the sides of the jersey top and shorts.
ARROWHEADS
The 22 arrowheads lining the bottom of the shorts represents each of the state’s 22 tribes.
BE THE FIRST.
PHOENIX. The Valley.
If you’re here, you get it.
It’s not just a destination. Or a point on a map.
It’s more than that.
It’s an attitude, a way of life
A connection, a community, a bond
A motivation to get to work when no one is paying attention
A resiliency forged by desert heat
An unwavering pursuit of greatness that gets us up in the morning
And takes us into the night.
When you’re here, you feel it.That pride, it’s unmistakable.
We’re here.Together.Facing every challenge.
“We are the Valley”
CENTERCOURT CREATIVE
Designed by the Suns' in-house creative team, Centercourt Creative, the new Nike Statement Edition uniform capture Phoenix’s vibrant colors, cityscape, and community. For the first time since 2019 the jersey features a bold “PHX” across the chest.
HOMAGE TO THE VALLEY
The sunset gradient along the piping, trim and numbers pays homage to iconic Arizona sunsets and “The Valley” City Edition uniform worn by the Suns the past two seasons. The jersey chassis is reminiscent of the team’s 2017 Statement uniform.
HOMECOMING
The Suns will debut the new Statement uniform when the team opens the 2022-23 season against the Dallas Mavericks at Footprint Center on October 19. The uniform will remain in the rotation for multiple seasons and replace the orange statement uniform first introduced in 2019.
MAKE A STATEMENT.
The streaking sun. The asymmetrical shorts. One of the most iconic uniforms in NBA history arrived in Phoenix three decades ago. In celebration of that 30th anniversary the classic rising sunburst uniform is once again bringing the heat to NBA fans with a refreshed look for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
The Nike Hardwood Classic Edition uniform, presented by PayPal, is a modern version of the cult classic.
So, fire up that Walkman, and take a trip down memory lane.
A CITY ON FIRE
Sir Charles arrived and set the Valley ablaze, gaining the attention of national pundits and basketball fans everywhere. Alongside Suns veterans like Thunder Dan, KJ, Mark West, Tom Chambers, Tim Kempton and Cedric Ceballos, this “small” market made its mark on the global basketball stage on its way to the 1993 NBA Finals.
A RADICAL CHANGE
The sunburst marked the first major redesign of the team’s uniforms in more than 20 years. The unis debuted on November 7, 1992, the regular season opener and the first NBA game to be played inside the new arena in the heart of downtown Phoenix (then named America West Arena, now Footprint Center).
RECORD SETTING
Suns Ring of Honor member Paul Westphal coached the team to a record 62 regular season wins and a Western Conference Championship, a number that stood for 29 years.
THE CULT CLASSIC RETURNS
They’re back! The Suns will wear the uniform throughout the 22-23 season and celebrate the 30th anniversary by hosting immersive 90s nights and launch a Hardwood Classic collection of apparel to accompany the season-long anniversary celebration.
