Lopez And Love Added To USA Basketball Select Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. July 18, 2008 Ė Robin Lopez, Phoenix Suns, and Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves, two top 15 draft choices in the 2008 NBA Draft who have made strong impressions in the 2008 NBA Summer League, will join the original 10 NBA players named to the 2008 USA Basketball Select Team to complete the 12-member roster, USA Basketball announced today. The two rising stars were selected after stellar performances in the 2008 NBA Summer League, which is slated to wrap up July 20 after ten days of competition in Las Vegas.
The two will remain in Las Vegas through July 24 and will join the USA Select Team that is comprised of youthful NBA sensations and will help prepare the 2008 USA Menís Senior National Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Included among the original 10 players named to the USA Basketball Select Team on July 16 were: LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland Trail Blazers; Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City NBA; Jeff Green, Oklahoma City NBA; Luther Head, Houston Rockets; Al Horford, Atlanta Hawks; Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia 76ers; Kevin Martin, Sacramento Kings; O.J. Mayo Memphis Grizzlies; Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls and Rodney Stuckey, Detroit Pistons.
As was the case last summer, Oklahoma City head coach P.J. Carlesimo, who served as an assistant with the 1992 U.S. Olympic "Dream Team" and who has been a head or assistant coach of six other USA Basketball teams, will serve as head coach of the USA Select Team and assisting Carlesimo for a second straight summer is Toronto Raptors assistant coach Jay Triano.
The select squad will begin training July 20 in Las Vegas and is expected to train and scrimmage against the USA Senior National Team from July 21-24. The Americans will cap the Las Vegas portion of its training on July 25 (5 p.m. Las Vegas local time) with the 2008 State Farm USA Basketball Challenge where the USA will meet the Canadian National Team at Thomas & Mack Center.
After playing four games between July 31- Aug. 5 that are part of the USA Basketball International Challenge in Macao and Shanghai, China, the United States will arrive in Beijing, Aug. 6.
Preliminary round play of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games takes place Aug. 10-18. The U.S., which was placed in preliminary Group B, opens preliminary play Aug. 10 against host China at 10:15 p.m. (all times listed are Beijing local times which is 12 hours ahead of EDT); then play Africa zone champion Angola on Aug. 12 at 8:00 p.m.; on Aug. 14 at 8:00 p.m. the USA will face Qualifier C who will be determined through the July 14-20 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament; 2006 FIBA World Champion Spain on Aug. 16 at 10:15 p.m.; and the USA will close out preliminary play Aug. 18 at 8:00 p.m. against Qualifier B who will be determined through the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The menís Olympic quarterfinals action takes place Aug. 20, semifinals play is slated for Aug. 22and the Olympic menís gold and bronze medal games will be held Aug. 24.
Named to the 2008 USA Basketball Senior National Team were: Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets); Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz); Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic); LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers); Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks); Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets); Tayshaun Prince (Detroit Pistons); Michael Redd (Milwaukee Bucks); Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat); and Deron Williams (Utah Jazz).
Duke University Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski is head coach of the USA Senior Team program. Serving as assistant coaches are Syracuse University and Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, New York Knicks head mentor Mike DíAntoni and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan.
