LAS VEGAS -- Trailing from buzzer to buzzer, the Dallas Mavericks came within four points of the Washington Wizards before being defeated, 88-82. John Wall sank four free throws with fewer than 30 seconds on the clock to give his Wizards an eight point lead, but Dallas charged back down the court, scoring an easy layup to bring the Mavericks within six. The Mavericks called a time out with 4.7 seconds remaining in the game, but their fourth-quarter run wasn't enough to overcome what had grown to an 18-point hole.
John Wall finished the game with 21 points and 10 assists, one shy of the 2010 NBA Summer League record. His efforts were complimented by Cartier Martin's 23-point outing and an 18-point game from JaVale McGee. Dallas' Dominique Jones finished with 28 points, while Jeremy Lin scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to give him 13 for the game.
The Wizards couldn't miss early in the first quarter, as the team jumped to an early 15-0 lead over Dallas. Martin and Hudson sunk back-to-back-to back three-pointers in a span of 90 seconds, taking what was a two-point game and turning it into an 11-point advantage, prompting a Dallas time out. The Mavericks cut the lead to seven with three minutes to play, but McGee had Dallas' number, slamming down back-to-back dunks to give his Wizards an 11-point lead, 26-15 with 2:32 to play in the quarter. At the end of one, Martin had amassed 11 points and the Wizards owned a nine-point lead, 30-21.
The Mavericks rallied back in the second quarter, outscoring the Wizards 19-17, cutting the lead to seven points, 47-40, heading into the halftime break. Dominique Jones led the offensive effort in the period, scoring seven points to bring his total to 14 in the game. Wall, the first overall selection in June's 2010 NBA Draft, finished the half with nine points and eight of the Wizard's 13 assists. Martin was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 from behind the three point arc, for 15 points in the first half.
The Wizards went on a 10-3 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter, extending their lead to more than 15 points in the third quarter as Martin's shot continued to fall. He scored eight points in the quarter, bringing his game total to 23 at the end of three. McGee also scored eight points in the quarter, as did Dallas' Jones.
The Wizards continues their Summer League run tomorrow when the team takes on the New Orleans Hornets. The Mavericks return to action on Sunday, July 18, when the team faces the Sacramento Kings in the final day of Summer League action.
