Meet JaMychal Green

According to forward JaMychal Green, the Spurs added a high-energy and high-effort player when they signed him to 10-day contract on Sunday.

Green, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward, joins the Silver and Black from the Austin Spurs of the NBA D-League, where he averaged 23.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.

Wearing No. 41, Sunday’s game against Utah is Green’s first regular-season game in an NBA uniform.

“I’m just going to play hard,” Green said. “This is a blessing, and I’m going to do everything that Coach Popovich asks me to do. It’s all about helping us win. Whether it’s rebounding, defending, I’ll do anything to win.”

Green played for San Antonio during the 2014 preseason, averaging 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in four games.

The 24-year-old was recently named the NBA D-League Player of the Month for December, averaging 24.3 points and 11.3 rebounds while the Austin Spurs had a 9-1 record.

“He's a real active kid, long, a good athlete, and pretty tough minded,” coach Gregg Popovich said.

After playing collegiately at Alabama, Green played with the Spurs’ Summer League team in both 2012 and 2014. He’s had two stints with the Austin Spurs, playing in 2012-13 and this season, while he spent 2013-14 with the French team Chorale Roanne.

“He’s far more reliable now than two years ago,” Spurs assistant general manager Sean Marks said. “He worked so hard to improve his game, did a tremendous job in the D-League, and now he’s here.”

Green credits Spurs assistant Chip Engelland for much of his improvement.

He spent the summer working with Engelland to improve his shooting, and said he reformed most of his motion from the way he held the ball, the way he used his guide hand and the way he spread his fingers while shooting.

Green has made 57.7 percent of field goals (179 of 310) this season in Austin.

“There were a lot of little things that led to a lot of major changes,” Green said. “Chip was working with me for the entire summer and the results are starting to show. I’m starting to knock down shots and I’m shooting confidently. I thank Chip for everything.”
