New Orleans Hornets Roger Mason, Jr. played with the Spurs for two seasons from 2008-10. Mason Jr. appeared in 161 games and averaged 9.1 points and 1.9 rebounds. He also appeared in 11 playoff games for the Silver and Black. Mason Jr. took some time before New Orleans’ matchup against the Spurs on Jan. 23 to speak with spurs.com.
On his time with the Spurs:
“My best experiences I’ve had as a player. The organization is first class. We were the only show in town, so it was pretty special. The fan base has always been tremendous, back then and even now. I had great teammates and two great coaches I played for.”
On his time with the Spurs:
“It was a great to be part of a championship franchise, some of the best years of my career. I have a lot of fond memories.”
On his favorite memories with the Spurs:
“I had a lot of good ones. One of the best memories, because it was going on in my personal life with my Mom having cancer, was hitting the shot (game-winner at Phoenix) on Christmas. It was special because it was rough patch for our family and this organization really embraced me at that time. It was a special moment for me.”
On his favorite memories off the court:
“There’s a few, but Christmas time again, going and playing Santa with the kids. I still have pictures with my Spurs stuff with the Santa hat. I remember seeing the happy faces of the young kids. I have memories going to see the wounded veterans. Those are the memories that I really cherish giving back to a community down here that embraced me.”
On his favorite places to eat and visit:
“I was a big Wildfish guy. I was there all the time. There were a lot of places out in Stone Oak that I went to often. Ounce Steakhouse was one of my favorites, too. Those were my places to go.”
