#21 Announces the Tim Duncan Foundation
San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan today announced the creation of The Tim Duncan Foundation. The Foundation will fund nonprofit organizations in the areas of education, health awareness and research, and youth sports and recreation.
“This is very exciting for me,” said Duncan. “I’ve been involved in the community, but now through my Foundation, I can support worthwhile causes not only in San Antonio, but also in North Carolina where I went to college and back home in the U.S. Virgin Islands. All of these places are very special to me, and I feel blessed that I can help make a difference to the people in these communities.”
The Tim Duncan Foundation will support causes in the US Virgin Islands, Winston-Salem, North Carolina and South Texas. Foundation funds will be raised through special events and fundraisers. Over the last two years – through the Tim Duncan Bowling for Dollar$ Charity Bowl-A-Thon – Duncan has raised and donated more than $250,000 to help fight breast and prostate cancer. In addition he hosts an annual charity golf tournament in San Antonio.
At the same time the Tim Duncan Foundation unveiled its new logo. The logo was created to symbolize the spirit of giving and the Foundation’s desire to “reach for a brighter tomorrow.” The new logo will first appear on Dec. 21 in the Alamodome on Tim’s Community Ticket Section Banner “Slam Duncan Kids”-- a block of 25 tickets in section 109 that he has purchased and donated to underserved children for each and every Spurs home game since his rookie season.
The Tim Duncan Foundation has also donated $25,000 to purchase and install the first wooden basketball court on the island of St. Croix, Tim’s homeland in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The court’s installation is scheduled for Central High School on the island in late January 2002. In San Antonio, the Foundation recently purchased a multi-purpose vehicle from Gunn Automotive for Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives (RMYA). The vehicle will replace the center’s existing van with a newer, safer means of transportation for the nearly 700 children per year that they serve. RMYA cares for children in crisis and operates an emergency shelter, a long-term residential placement facility, an independent living program and a counseling center.
Tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations serving the public in the areas of education, health awareness and research, and youth sports and recreation interested in receiving further information should submit a request in writing to The Tim Duncan Foundation, #608, 24165 IH 10 West, Suite 217, San Antonio, Texas 78257-1159. Priority will be given to organizations in South Texas, Winston-Salem, and the U.S. Virgin Islands that support the various goals of The Tim Duncan Foundation as reflected in its mission statement. Funding requests for travel, operational expenses, salaries, and political activities or organizations will not be considered. In addition, donations will not be granted to individuals, churches, religious organizations for sectarian purposes, schools (public or private) or school system foundations, or sports teams.
