FIBA World Cup Watch | Korkmaz Impresses Versus USA

by Lauren Rosen

In a contest that provided more than your average Tuesday morning’s worth of entertainment, Team USA bested Turkey in a 93-92 overtime thriller in Shanghai.

Newly re-signed 76er Furkan Korkmaz scored 16 points in the contest, shooting 6 for 11 from the field while hitting a trio of 3-pointers. The loss dropped Turkey to 1-1 in the group phase of this year's FIBA World Cup.

Korkmaz’ biggest moment in the contest came with 4:00 remaining in regulation, when he tied the game at 74-74 by knocking down a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, another Korkmaz 3-pointer had brought Turkey within three points. He followed that up with an assist to Melih Mahmutoglu that narrowed the gap to two.

Despite a remarkable effort, Turkey couldn’t overcome Team USA down the stretch, ultimately taking a late lead but falling in overtime.

“The USA has a lot of players who can change the game,” Korkmaz said. “Today, the game was in our hands. We need to build confidence and be proud of this game”

Korkmaz and Turkey take the floor once again Thursday, facing the Czech Republic at 4:30 a.m.  ET.
