Ennis III Ready to Level Up as Season Nears

by Lauren Rosen

Fans may think they know James Ennis III, but the returning 76er says he’s ready to showcase a new side of his game this season.

Prepare for 'Ennis the Menace,' as he calls it.

Ennis III, who joined the Sixers at the February trade deadline, made an immediate impact for the team by providing consistent sparks off the bench. Looking ahead to his first full season in uniform, he feels he can bring more to the table.

“When you know your role, it makes it easier,” Ennis III said last week during a session with reporters at the Training Complex. “I know my role coming into this year, so I’ll be a lot better. I’m going to be more comfortable. You guys will be able to see Ennis the Menace this year.”

James Ennis III already brought plenty to the table -- so Ennis the Menace is sure to be something special.

With this alter ego at the ready, Ennis III is eager to tackle the challenges ahead.

“I’m definitely excited, I’ve been waiting for this since last year ended. I feel like summer flew by,” he said.

The Southern California native spent most of his offseason back home, where a court was even dedicated in his honor, training with a focus on improvement on both sides of the ball.

On the defensive end, Ennis III was often charged with some of the team’s toughest matchups last season. He hopes to build on those assignments.

“This year, I’m going to hang my hat on defense,” Ennis III said. “I’m going to do anything to help this team on the defensive end.”

Earlier in the summer, Ennis III expressed confidence about the Sixers' chances in the Eastern Conference. The sentiment was a reflection of the team's personnel moves.

“Everywhere is just size. It’s going to be hard to stop us,” Ennis III said. “I’m very confident in this group. We have a lot of talent, and we’re very versatile, so I’m going to continue to believe in this team."

With Ennis III back in the mix, 'menacing' might be another descriptor to add to the list.
