Four-time NBA All-Star and Philadelphia 76ers standout Joel Embiid announced today that he will donate his winnings from Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game to Philadelphia homeless shelters, including Project HOME, Sunday Breakfast Mission and Youth Service INC. In total Embiid has committed $100,000 across these organizations. 

“So many have fallen on such hard times during the pandemic,” Embiid said. “I felt it was important to provide more support for individuals and families struggling with homelessness and food insecurity. I’m continually grateful for all of the support that Philadelphia and the fans have given me not just around All-Star but all my years in the league. I will continue to help in any way I can.”

Embiid takes the floor for Team Durant this Sunday in Atlanta for the 2021 All-Star game. The game will air on TNT at 8 p.m. ET. Embiid posted 905 points, 348 rebounds and 41 blocks in the First Half of the 2020-21 season for the top team in the Eastern Conference. The only two other players to tally such statistics within their first 30 games of a season are Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bob McAdoo.

Los Sixers continúan con su magnífica racha positiva en casa, con su décimo tercera victoria al hilo en lo que llevamos de temporada. Un hito que no se veía en la ciudad de Philadelphia desde 1966. Ya ha llovido mucho desde entonces, pero lo cierto es que esta buena racha de resultados hace ser optimista acerca de las opciones de luchar por el anillo que tiene este equipo.

La última víctima de los Sixers en el Sur de Philadelphia fueron los Denver Nuggets, que cayeron en el segundo duelo que les ha enfrentado esta temporada, por 97-92. Un pequeña venganza de lo ocurrido en el primer envite entre ambos equipos y que se saldó con triunfo de los Nuggets en Colorado.

Ahora las cosas fueron de manera muy distinta, con un Joel Embiid inspirado y que guió a los Sixers a un nuevo triunfo en casa, superando la barrera de la veintena de puntos anotados, y con un doble-doble que añadió a su cuenta particular.

El partido fue muy ajustado en líneas generales, aunque con algún que otro susto de los Nuggets en los primeros compases del juego, al colocarse 10-17 con casi seis minutos por disputar del primer cuarto, lo que hizo apretar los dientes a los Sixers, para que los visitantes no pusieran mucha distancia en el marcador, en la primera mitad.

El segundo cuarto fue todo lo contrario, con los locales algo desatados en el juego y con ventajas que llegaron a ser de hasta 14 puntos (47-33 con 7:16 para el descanso), lo que hizo pensar que quizás el juego se podría romper ahí y disfrutar los fans de una plácida victoria de los Sixers.

La victoria llegó, pero no fue un camino de rosas, ya que los Nuggets volvieron a tener opciones en el encuentro, llegando a colocarse con delante en el marcador en algún tramo del encuentro (69-70 a falta de 5:16 para el final del tercer periodo), y no permitiendo que las ventajas de los Sixers fueran demasiado elevadas en el tramo final del juego, con lo que mantuvieron vivas sus opciones hasta el final.

Joel Embiid fue el mejor de los Sixers, anotando 22 puntos en 31 minutos de juego y con un 8-18 en tiros de campo (0-3 en triples y 6-7 en tiros libres), a los que sumó 10 rebotes, 6 asistencias, 2 robos de balón y un tapón. Grandes números para el center africano de los Sixers, que volvió a ser referente del equipo en la cancha.

Como también lo fue una vez más Tobias Harris, que concluyó el duelo ante los Nuggets alcanzando la veintena de puntos, gracias a un 7-17 en tiros de campo, incluyendo un 2-4 en triples y un 4-5 en tiros libres. A sus 20 puntos anotados, hay que destacar sus 7 rebots capturados y las 4 asistencias repartidas, para mantener el buen nivel de juego que está mostrando desde hace ya muchas fechas.

Otros dos jugadores de los Sixers alcanzaron dobles dígitos en anotación, frente a Denver. Por un lado, Al horford llegó a los 11 puntos gracias a un 5-16 en tiros de campo (1-8 en triples), sumando además un total de 9 rebotes (3 en ataque y 6 en defensa), además de 2 asistencias y 2 robos de balón.

Por su parte, Matisse Thybulle también volvió a tener una excelente noche, con un sensacional 5-8 en tiros de campo (3-4 en triples), que le permitieron sumar 13 puntos, además de sumar 5 rebotes, un robo de balón y una asistencias, siendo el mejor de la banca de Brett Brown.

Destacar también los 7 puntos (3-6 en tiros de campo), 9 rebotes y 7 asistencias de Ben Simmons, además de los 8 puntos de Mike Scott (3-7 en tiros de campo), los 7 puntos de James Ennis III (3-5 en tiros de campo), los 6 puntos de Furkan Korkmaz (2-4 en tiros de campo, siendo todo lo intentado desde más allá de la línea de tres puntos) y los 3 puntos de Josh Richardson (1-8 en tiros de campo), que volvió a las canchas, para ayudar a los Sixers.

Los Nuggets por su parte cedieron la batalla por el rebote (49-38) y no estuvieron nada acertados desde el triple con menos de un 26% de efectividad (7 de 27). Will Barton anotó 26 puntos y Nikola Jokic estuvo cerca del triple-doble con 15 tantos, siete rebotes y 11 asistencias. Pero sin duda, la peor noticia fue la lesión de Jamal Murray, que apenas pudo disputar cinco minutos por un fuerte golpe con Ben Simmons que le dejó KO.

El siguiente duelo de los Sixers será de escándalo. Los Celtics también están intratables en su casa y los Sixers quieren romper esa dinámica. En el siguiente duelo, que será en el TD Garden de Boston, estará en juego el liderato de la división Atlántica y el prestigio entre estas dos franquicias que son rivales históricos.

Los Sixers terminan el mes de noviembre con un balance de 14-6, invictos en casa, con 9 triunfos al hilo en el Sur de Philadelphia y solo con la traba de haber tenido una mala gira por el Oeste, que es lo que más ha pesado en las 6 derrotas que ahora lucen los hombres de Brett Brown.

Ahora comienza un nuevo mes, y con el segundo de competición (si incluimos los pocos juegos disputados en Octubre y los disputados en Noviembre, como parte del primer mes de competición) llega el momento de demostrar que el engranaje de este equipo empieza a carburar como se espera de todo un aspirante al anillo de campeón de la NBA (aunque todavía queda mucho tiempo para llegar al mes de abril y los playoffs).

La primera gran cita llega nada más empezar diciembre, con la visita al Sur de Philadelphia de los Utah Jazz. Un rival que aspira a dar un golpe en la mesa del Oeste de la NBA, y que llega a nuestro feudo estando los Sixers invictos en casa, por lo que será un choque más que interesante.

Si a eso le sumamos la contundente derrota sufrida en Toronto por el equipo de Utah, queda un choque en el que ambos conjuntos quieren demostrar muchas cosas.

Luego llegará un nuevo choque en el Este, visitando los Sixers la capital federal, para verse las caras con los Wizards. Todo antes de volver a verse las caras con los Cavaliers en casa. ¿Qué juego nos encontraremos frente Cleveland? En las dos precedentes ocasiones vencimos a los Cavs, pero una fue de manera agónica y la otra holgada, por lo que ese juego será una incógnita.

Ese juego frente a los Cavs, dará inicio a una serie de tres juegos en casa, donde rendirán visita al Sur de Philadelphia los Raptors (con el morbo que ello genera) y los Nuggets (otro de los cocos de la conferencia Oeste).

Luego vendrá una serie de juegos con viajes continuos. Primero visita a Boston, para verse las caras con el eterno rival, con el morbo del retorno al TD Garden de Al Horford, con la camiseta de los Sixers.

Luego vendrá un juego en casa frente a los Pelicans, para viajar de nuevo lejos de casa (en Brooklyn frente a los Nets) y regresar de nuevo a casa (Jimmy Butler y los Heat volverán al Sur de Philadelphia).

La época navideña nos deparará la oportunidad de ver a Luka Doncic en el Sur de Philadlephia, así como a los Wizards, en el segundo choque en este mes frente al equipo de Washington. Luego visita a Detroit para medirse a los Pistons y vivir uno de los mejores momentos de la temporada, con el duelo el día de Navidad con los Bucks de Milwaukee, en el que podría ser una antesala de la final de la Conferencia Este del 2020.

Los duels con los Magic y los Heat en Florida, más el juego el día de Nochevieja en Indiana, cerrarán este frenético mes de competición para los Sixers. Esperemos obtener buenos resultados y que sea el augurio de un sensacional año 2020, en donde podamos vivir un nuevo anillo de campeón para la organización y la ciudad de Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA – OCT. 16, 2019 – Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Elton Brand announced today that the team has exercised the 2020-21 third-year contract option for Zhaire Smith.

Smith has appeared in each of the 76ers’ four preseason games this month, most recently posting seven points in 12 minutes in a win over Detroit. In July, at MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2019, Smith was second on the team with averages of 12.4 points and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting .480 from the field.

The second-year player saw action in six games (two starts) as a rookie, averaging 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 18.5 minutes per game. In the season finale against Chicago on April 10, he posted career highs with 17 points (7-13 FG), four rebounds and five assists in 32 minutes.

Originally selected by Phoenix with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Smith was acquired by Philadelphia in a draft-night trade. Prior to the draft, he played one collegiate season at Texas Tech, averaging 11.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals in 28.4 minutes per game. Smith helped lead the Red Raiders to the 2018 Elite Eight, its first such appearance in program history, averaging 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in four NCAA Tournament games.

PHILADELPHIA – JAN. 24, 2019 – The Philadelphia 76ers announced today that Justin Patton and Zhaire Smith have both been assigned to the Delaware Blue Coats of the NBA G League.

Patton, who is returning from right foot surgery, will begin practicing with the Blue Coats with limited and controlled contact, while Smith, who suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot, will begin by participating in the non-contact elements of the Blue Coats practices. The pair will be with the Blue Coats while the 76ers embark on a four-game Western Conference road trip.

Patton was acquired on Nov. 12, 2018, in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was originally selected by Chicago with the No. 16 overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft before being traded to Minnesota on draft night. He played one collegiate season at Creighton.

The 76ers acquired Smith, the No. 16 overall selection of the 2018 NBA Draft, in a draft-night trade with Phoenix. After a convincing win at home and two days of rest, the 76ers (21-12) will host the NBA-leading Toronto Raptors (24-9) at The Center Saturday night in their final home game of 2018.

Brett Brown said despite talent and flashes of promise — most recently including Wednesday’s 131-109 rout of the Knicks — his team is still finding and defining itself.

Now, the Sixers will continue that pursuit while going up against stiffer competition, as Toronto, Boston, and several strong Western Conference opponents await on the horizon. 

The Sixers took a step in the right direction Wednesday. After shooting 53.4 percent from the field collectively and watching JJ Redick score his 10,000th NBA point, the team left The Center in good spirits.

But a win on Saturday could contribute to the Sixers’ identity in a bigger way. The Raptors have bested the Sixers in both of this season’s matchups to date.

During their most recent meeting on December 5th, Jimmy Butler scored a season-high 38 points. Joel Embiid went for 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists.

“We’ve been getting better,” Embiid said that night in Toronto. “[Butler] carried the load offensively. I just need to do a better job next time.”

Next time is here, and it brings for the Sixers a chance to generate momentum ahead of a season-long road trip. Following Saturday’s contest, the team will play in Boston on Christmas Day, before visiting the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, LA Clippers, and Phoenix Suns to ring in the new year.

In Friday’s 126-110 home win over Cleveland, Toronto got 37 points from Kawhi Leonard. Rookie head coach Nick Nurse said after the game the two-time Defensive Player of the Year will sit out Saturday’s tilt at The Center.

Raptors’ starters Kyle Lowry, Danny Green, and Serge Ibaka were all missing from action Friday due to injury.

Toronto has gone 5-5 in its last 10 games.
