Introducing your 2007-2008 Rockets Power Dancers...
It may be summer time, but like our Rockets players, our Power Dancers are already gearing up for the season! On Wednesday, July 11, twenty-two talented dancers joined team captain Carrie to complete this year’s Power Dancer squad. In total, 45 finalists vied for those 22 coveted spots. This year’s team includes teachers, business analysts, personal trainers, pharmaceutical reps, undergrad and grad students, and more. And the dancers all have diverse backgrounds – collegiate cheer and dance, figure skating, elite level gymnastics, and several already have pro dance team experience. Rockets fans will recognize several familiar faces and can look forward to meeting all the veteran and rookie team members more on a “making of” show to air later this summer on FSN. Congratulations to all our team members who did a fantastic job throughout the audition process!
Wondering how our 2007-2008 team members earned their spots? Here’s a quick look at the audition process and what it takes to become part of the elite RPD squad…
It all starts with Prelims - Record numbers of aspiring dancers braved rainy weather Sunday, July 1st to audition for the Rockets Power Dancers. Sunday started off in style as everyone arrived at Toyota Center bright and early to learn Round 1’s Broadway style jazz routine set to the Pussycat Doll’s “Right Now,” taught by former RPD Captain Nicole. The competition was stiff, but after auditioning for the judging panel of former RPD, Rockets staff, local media, and special guests on the Toyota Center court, over 100 dancers were selected to move on to Round 2.
At this point, the former RPD re-auditioning for the team entered the mix (all current RPD receive a first round bye but must re-audition for their spots every year). Round 2 participants learned a full length hip-hop routine to Justin Timberlake’s “Summer Love” from Coach and Choreographer “Sweet Susie” Boudwin. These ladies auditioned in smaller groups for the judges, and at the end of the very long day, 45 talented ladies advanced to the finals training camp.
Why a camp instead of choosing the team the day of prelims? Well, it’s an RPD tradition involving tough rehearsals, background screenings, and a professional interview for each candidate. It’s important that RPD are more than just outstanding dancers, and the different elements of the training camp allow the coaches and judges to learn more about each finalist, including the individual strengths and achievements the finalists hold that can add to the team. During the rehearsals, the participants practiced “across-the-floor” dance technique, learned a new technical jazz routine to Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer,” and polished the Round 1 and Round 2 routines.
And all this was in preparation for the Final Audition, which took place Wednesday, July 11th, at the Memorial Hermann Wellness Center. Dancers signed in, warmed up, and performed all three of their routines for the judges, in addition to a quick Q&A session held in their audition groups. The judges had a very tough time choosing the final squad, and even added an extra spot to the team because they were so impressed with everything the candidates had to offer. Great job to all our finalists! Stay tuned for photos from the ladies’ very first photo shoot, taking place right after they made the team!
