First NBA Preseason game featuring an Argentinean Team

The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that reigning Argentinean championship team San Lorenzo de Almagro will travel to Toronto, Canada for a preseason game against the Toronto Raptors, marking the first time an Argentinean basketball club will take on an NBA team. The game will take place at the Air Canada Centre on Friday, Oct. 14 and will be available internationally on NBA League Pass.

San Lorenzo de Almagro, which plays its home games in Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of Argentina’s Liga Nacional de Básquet (LNB), recently won its first LNB championship in 2016 after topping La Union 4-0 in the finals. Former NBA player Walter Herrmann (Charlotte Bobcats 2006-07; Detroit Pistons 2007-09) was named finals MVP.

“We are thrilled to have San Lorenzo take part in our preseason schedule and continue the NBA’s tradition of hosting top tier clubs from around the world,” said NBA Latin America Vice President and Managing Director Arnon de Mello. “We are certain that fans will be treated to an exciting matchup between two of the top teams in their respective leagues.”

“The Toronto Raptors have a proud history of playing host to international clubs and our organization and fans look forward to welcoming San Lorenzo de Almagro to our city,” said Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri. “We are honoured to join with the NBA to promote our global game.”

“Club Atletico San Lorenzo de Almagro has a long tradition of making history, and this game against the NBA’s Toronto Raptors is yet another way to demonstrate its continued effort to grow the game and celebrate all it has to offer,” said San Lorenzo de Almagro President Matías Lammens.

This will be the ninth time the Raptors will face an opponent from outside North America at Air Canada Centre. Previous contests were: 2003, Panathinaikos (Greece); 2004, Benetton (Italy); 2005, Maccabi Tel-Avia (Israel); 2006, Maccabi Tel-Avia (Israel); 2007, Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania); 2008, CSKA Moscow (Russia); 2012, Real Madrid (Spain) and 2014, Maccabi Haifa (Israel).

The Raptors’ full 2016 preseason schedule will be announced at a later date.
