The Toronto Raptors unveiled their new “Huskies” uniform Monday. The retro uniform, a replica of the one used by the Toronto Huskies during the 1946-47 campaign, will be worn for six home games this season as part of the NBA’s Hardwood Classics Nights and a celebration of basketball in Toronto. The Raptors’ first Hardwood Classics Night is Tuesday, December 8 as they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Toronto Huskies were a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (a forerunner of the National Basketball Association) during the 1946-47 season. The Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers in the BAA’s first game, November 1, 1946 at Maple Leaf Gardens. An opening night crowd of 7,090 saw New York defeat Toronto 68-66. On that night, anyone taller than George Nostrand, the tallest Huskie at 6-foot-8, was given free admission.

Raptors forward Hedo Turkoglu and guard DeMar DeRozan were on hand Monday to model the blue and white retro uniforms at the new Naismith exhibit located on the third floor of Air Canada Centre (opposite Section 304).

The Naismith exhibit features numerous items from Dr. James Naismith’s personal collection including handwritten documents pertaining to the invention of basketball and early evolution of the game, personal photographs, handwritten plays, his personal rule books and the whistle that he used while teaching and coaching at the University of Kansas. The items are part of a 25 piece collection MLSE purchased from the Dr. James Naismith Collection in support of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in December, 2006.

The Raptors are offering a special Hardwood Classic ticket package for the six Hardwood Classics Nights in which fans receive a game ticket, a mesh-back Huskies hat and a Hedo Turkoglu bobblehead.
