Jazz forward Donyell Marshall, one of our NBA.commentators for NBA Playoffs 2001, answered questions from fans on one of the off days between Games 2 and 3 against the Mavericks. The Jazz hold a 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference first round.
They say Karl Malone wears the same socks to every game. Do you wear anything special like that? Or do you do something special before a game?
No. I try to take a nap before each game. If I played well during a game I always try to listen to the same CD that I listened to prior to the game.
What do you think your biggest challenge will be in the playoffs?
I think the biggest challenge will be playing consistent. As well as staying focused and in great shape. I have never played this long in the season before so I don't know what it's really like to keep your body in good condition. I think those are the biggest challenges for me, you have to learn how to do that.
Yo Donyell, this being your first playoff run, what have you prepared yourself to expect? Are you nervous? We all love you in Salt Lake City and we'd love to see you here in the post Stockton and Malone era.
I have prepared myself to get beat up. I know it's more physical inside. I have prepared myself for that as well as being mentally tough.
I just wanted to know what you felt like when you found out you were coming to Utah? Did you feel weird, excited, or what? Well I am glad we got you either way. I think you added a lot to the team. Do you like playing with all the other Jazz members?
It's been great, it's been a great season I like all the players on the team, we have a lot of fun on and off of the court. This is the first team I have been with like that in the pros, before we would go to practice and go to the games and that's all we would be around each other.
Do John Stockton and Karl Malone give you advice in making your game better?
Yes they do. They tell me how to run the floor, where to be at on certain parts of the court and certain plays. How to play defense, how to run offense, and just as well as playing hard. They also help me mentally to prepare for things on the court.
Do you think Dallas will be hard to compete against? I think you will win the series and then go to the NBA finals and win that. Well, I hope you do well in the playoffs.
We plan on finishing this up on Saturday so we can get some rest and prepare for the next round. We think we can do it if we go in and play smart, don't get caught up in they hype and play Jazz basketball the way we have been playing.
Assuming you get past the Mavericks, who would you rather face in the second round: San Antonio or Minnesota?
Either team is good, San Antonio beat us all four times and we split with Minnesota. Right know it looks like it will probably be San Antonio. Right know it's the playoffs and it doesn't really matter, anyone can get beat at any point in time.
