DeMarcus Amir Cousins was born in Mobile, Alabama, to Monique and Jessie Cousins. He has four sisters and a brother, Jaleel, who is also a professional basketball player. Cousins attended LeFlore Magnet High School in his hometown of Mobile. He earned recognition as a First-Team Parade All-American in 2009. That season, he played in the McDonald's All-American Boys Game, tallying 14 points and eight rebounds. Cousins also played in the 2009 Nike Hoop Summit and the Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden. As a professional, he participated in the 2017 NBA Africa Game in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a member of Team World. In 2017, Cousins was awarded the Offseason NBA Cares Community Assist Award in recognition of his frequent charity work for those in need.
