Derek Bernard Favors was born in 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Deandra Favors and has an older sister (Tiffany) and a younger brother (Brandon). Favors is also the father of twin daughters. He attended and played basketball at South Atlanta High School. As a senior, he led South Atlanta to the 2009 Georgia Class AAA state championship. For college, Favors stayed home and attended Georgia Tech for one season. After joining the Nets, Favors bought a house for his mom with his first NBA paycheck. While with Jazz in the summer of 2012, Favors took part in the annual Jr. Jazz trip, spending a week on the road holding basketball clinics across four states. Favors was also an ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area to help raise awareness, garner volunteer support and spearhead fundraising. During the summers of 2014 and 2015, Favors hosted back-to-school clinics for community youth in order to promote education and physical fitness. During both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, the veteran big man purchased tickets to home games, enabling local residents from more than 200 different community groups and schools to attend Jazz games.
