Courtney Lee was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Pike High School in Indianapolis and was part of the squad that won the Indiana 4A state championship in 2003. Lee also played AAU ball with the Indy Hornets, starring for the team as it captured several state championships. Since ascending to the NBA, Lee has taken part in multiple charitable causes. He has helped raise money for the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation, an organization that brings awareness to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The foundation was created in memory of Lee's close friend and college teammate, Daniel Rumph, who passed away during a pickup basketball game due to heart disease in 2005. Lee also joined teammate Kristaps Porzingis and former Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki for the 2017 NBA Africa Game at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event followed the 15th edition of Basketball Without Borders Africa and was held in support of UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and SOS Children's Villages South Africa.
