Jaylen Hoard, son of Katia and Antwon, was born in 1999 in Le Havre, France. He comes from a basketball family, as Antwon was at Murray State before embarking on an 18-year professional career overseas and Katia played college basketball at Washington and represented France at the 1994 FIBA Womens' World Championships. Hoard's younger sister, Anaia, has also represented France at the junior level. He's competed in the lower French divisions in and played with the INSEP athletic institute in Paris. Hoard then moved to High Point, North Carolina and played one year of high school hoops at Wesleyan Christian Academy. When he committed to play at Wake Forest University in 2017, he became the school's highest-ranked recruit since 2008. Hoard went on to make 30 starts and average 13.1 points, becoming only the sixth Demon Deacon freshman to compile at least 400 points and 200 rebounds in a season.
