Chimezie Chukwudum Metu was born in Los Angeles, California in 1997. When he was six years old, Metu moved to Nigeria with his father. He lived in Nigeria for the following six years, building athleticism by playing soccer. Metu eventually moved back to California, attending and playing basketball at Lawndale High School. He played for the varsity team as a freshman, averaging 3.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest. His playing time and production grew over the following three seasons, and Metu was considered a four-star recruit by the end of his senior year. Following his first NBA season, Metu joined SA Youth and Spurs Sports & Entertainment to help refurbish a playground in the San Antonio area.
