Joshua O'Neal Jackson was born in 1997 in San Diego, California. His mother, Apples Jones, served in the U.S. Navy. He finished his high school basketball career playing for Prolific Prep while attending Justin-Siena High School in Napa, California. That was after playing for Consortium College Prep School in Detroit, Michigan during his freshman and sophomore years. In 2016, he was named a McDonald's High School All-American. Jackson collected 2016-17 All-Big 12 first team honors and was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team while playing for Kansas. The Detroit, Michigan native led the Jayhawks in steals (1.7) per game. He was also second on the team in average points (16.3) and rebounds (7.4). Jackson helped lead the Jayhawks to the 2017 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He entered the 2017 NBA Draft after his freshman season. He was selected at No. 4 overall by the Suns.
