Detroit Pistons to Break Own "Hair-Raising" Record

History Channel’s Hardwood Classics Night: Records Fall and Detroit Rock City Celebrated

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — On Wednesday, April 6 Detroit Pistons fans can get into the Guinness Book of World Records by helping the team break their own record for “most people wearing wigs in a single venue.”

When the Pistons host the Washington Wizards at 7:30 p.m., the 2004 NBA Champs will hold their fifth History Channel Hardwood Classics Night presented by Comcast Spotlight and Buscemi’s. The themes for the evening are Wig Night and Detroit Rock City as the team celebrates their “lightning bolt era” spanning the years 1978 to 1981. Doors for the game will open at 6:00 p.m.

Last season (March 19, 2004 vs. Denver Nuggets), the Pistons set a record when 6,213 fans wore wigs at the game. The Pistons, along with Rock Financial, will attempt to break that Guinness Book record for “Most People Wearing Wigs – Single Venue” when they give away red, white and blue Spirit Wigs courtesy of Rock Financial to the first 5,000 kids 14 and under. All fans are encouraged to wear wigs (afro, mullet, rainbow, etc. all accepted) for the evening.

During the game, fans will be asked to wear their wigs and members of The Palace staff will make an official count. Wigs are currently available at all Palace Locker Room stores in the metro area. With an anticipated sell-out crowd of 22,076, marking their 70th in a row, the Pistons expect to blow the top off the current record.

To commemorate Detroit Rock City, music from Detroit greats Bob Seger, Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper will be highlighted during the game. Music from KISS, the band that sang “Detroit Rock City” will also be featured. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite concert t-shirt and to paint their faces like the four members of KISS.

The final Detroit Pistons Hardwood Classics Night will be themed “Let’s Make a Deal Night” and is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th. The night will be part of the “Thanks Detroit” Fan Appreciation Week for the Detroit Pistons.
