Trey Murphy may not have won Saturday’s NBA slam dunk contest, but he was a bona fide winner in terms of creativity and the incorporation of a teammate from his franchise’s roster. The New Orleans Pelicans second-year forward advanced to the championship round before being edged by Philadelphia two-way contract signee Mac McClung, who proved virtually unbeatable with multiple perfect 50-caliber slams.

Murphy tipped off the event by going first in Round 1, pretending to make a bad toss on an alley oop to himself off a bounce. Jose Alvarado then raced in from the baseline to “steal the ball” from Murphy in patented “Grand Theft Alvarado” fashion. Alvarado then tossed a pass to Murphy off the backboard; the second-year forward threw down a dunk on his first attempt.

Murphy’s two-dunk score of 96.0 in the first round advanced him to the finals, but from there, McClung was flawless. Murphy became the first Pelicans player to ever participate in the annual event and the 22-year-old was the first dunk contest participant in New Orleans franchise history since 2005, when J.R. Smith and Chris Andersen (of the then-Hornets) were part of what was a fairly forgettable year in the event.

Murphy nearly registered a 50 in his second dunk of Round 2 as well, posting a 49.2 on a 360-degree windmill. All four of Murphy's scores from Saturday were the highest in New Orleans history, with the previous best coming from Smith, who notched a pair of 45s in the contest 18 years ago.
