JR. NBA COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS
The New Orleans Pelicans are now accepting nominations for the 2021 New Orleans Pelicans Jr. NBA Coach of the Year award.
The Jr. NBA Coach of the Year award is given to a youth basketball coach who coaches kids ages 6-14. Nominee must coach in an NBA, WNBA, or G League team market and demonstrates leadership and integrity, exhibits a positive attitude towards all players, coaches, parents, and referees, and creates a lasting impact on young people both on and off the court. Coaches who have been unable to engage with their athletes in-person due to the ongoing pandemic are still be eligible.
Only one (1) local youth basketball coach will be selected from the Pelicans market to be entered into the national Coach of the Year selection process.
The ideal Jr. NBA Coach of the Year exhibits the following:
- Takes a holistic approach to the game and serves as a mentor by demonstrating outstanding character, leadership, and integrity on and off the court
- Creates a culture that encourages character development amongst players (players giving maximum effort, promoting the importance of respect, teamwork, education, and more)
- Goes above and beyond call of action to help his/her youth organization and contributes to his/her community at large, outside the realm of basketball
- Uses sports as a tool to address and educate players on mental health and social justice issues
The Jr. NBA and Positive Coaching Alliance will conduct a screening process to narrow the pool of nominees to eight (8) national semifinalists. From the round of eight, an executive panel of judges, along with a fan vote via social media, will determine the top three finalists and national Jr. NBA Coach of the Year winner. The top three finalists will be awarded a $2,500 grant to support their local youth basketball organization and the National Coach of the Year will also be awarded an additional $2,500 grant (national winner to receive $5,000 grant in total).
