Five things to know about the Pelicans on Sept. 5

1)      Pelicans center Omer Asik and Turkey earned a spot in the knockout stage of the FIBA World Cup yesterday, partly on the strength of a 77-64 win over the Dominican Republic. Turkey finished pool play at 3-2, after starting 1-2 and narrowly escaping with a win in its World Cup opener.

2)      Turkey will next play Sunday against Australia in the Round of 16. From this point forward, it is a single-elimination format at the World Cup. Tip-off of Turkey-Australia is slated for 1 p.m. Central. You can follow the action on ESPN3.com.

3)      Anthony Davis and USA Basketball punctuated a perfect run in pool play with a one-sided 95-71 victory against Ukraine yesterday. The Americans went 5-0, with every game decided by at least 21 points.

4)      Team USA is back in action Saturday, with a 9 a.m. game against Mexico. Tomorrow's Round of 16 matchup between North American neighbors will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

5)      If the Americans win on the weekend, they will play Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. The semis and finals are slated for Thursday and Sunday, Sept. 14, respectively.
