One of the quietest players away from the court on the New Orleans Pelicans’ roster, this is Omer Asik’s debut season with the team. The 28-year-old is one of the club’s two international players (Alexis Ajinca is the other, from France) and has extensive experience in global basketball competition. He’s on his third NBA squad, having previously played for Chicago and Houston. Asik joined Pelicans.com to discuss some of his interests outside of the game:

Best moment as an athlete: “Playing in the FIBA world championship final in Turkey in 2010.”

How he chose his current uniform number of 3: “I don’t have any specific reason for 3. I just picked it and have kept it in the NBA.”

Favorite thing about New Orleans: “The food.”

First job: “I worked for my father in his business in Turkey.”

Favorite athlete as a kid: “Shaquille O’Neal.”

What he’d be doing if he weren’t an NBA player: “I would want to be a tennis player.”

Closest friends currently playing on other NBA teams: “Other Turkish NBA players, including Hedo Turkoglu of the Clippers and Ersan Ilyasova of Milwaukee.”

Favorite type of music: “I will listen to anything.”

Favorite TV show: “Breaking Bad.”

Favorite movies of all time: “The Godfather.”

Favorite website: “Pelicans.com.”
