New Orleans power forward Carl Landry, acquired just prior to the 2011 NBA trade deadline, sat down recently with to provide his thoughts on his background and several of his interests away from the game of basketball.

Person who’s had the most influence on my basketball career: “Cuonzo Martin, who is now the head coach now at Missouri State. He was an assistant coach at Purdue while I was there.”

People who had the most influence on my development off the court:“Probably my mom and dad, and being around my brothers and sisters.”

Best moment as an athlete: “Getting drafted into the NBA and making the team in Houston.”

How I chose uniform number 24: “I’ve always worn 14 in the past, but when I came here, Jason Smith already had 14. In Sacramento, 14 was retired for Oscar Robertson. I picked 24 because it was the closest thing to 14 that was available.”

One thing fans might be surprised to know about me: “That I like to fish. I haven’t had a chance to do that yet here, but I know Monty Williams fishes. I might have to go with him.”

Favorite thing about New Orleans: “Mardi Gras.”

Pregame ritual: “I pray before every game.”

First job: “I was a paper boy in Milwaukee. I enjoyed it because of the checks every Friday.” [laughs]

Favorite athlete as a kid: “Glenn Robinson, because he was my favorite player on the Milwaukee Bucks. I was a Bucks fan growing up and went to some games.”

What I’d be doing if I weren’t an NBA player: “Probably helping my dad in real estate.”

Closest friends currently playing on other NBA teams or in other pro sports: “(Former Houston Rockets teammate) Aaron Brooks of the Phoenix Suns. In the NFL, (fellow Purdue alum) Michael Neal of the Green Bay Packers and Jacoby Jones of the Houston Texans.”

Favorite type of music: “I’ll listen to anything.”

Favorite TV show: “Martin.”

Favorite movie of all time: “Life, with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy.”

Favorite websites: “Real GM, Hoops Hype,…” [smiles]
