What does the dance team do?

The dance team performs innovative, high energy, choreographed dance routines to a wide variety of music during timeouts and quarter breaks at all Pelicans home games and make promotional appearances at local and regional events throughout the year.

What is the time commitment involved?

The dance team practices at least twice a week, usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, for a minimum of 3 hours per practice. Practices are called on other days of the week as needed. There are 41+ home games that take place on weekdays and weekends as well as promotional appearances. A standard week usually requires at least an 18-hour commitment but could be much more based on the schedule.

What other requirements are involved?

Dance team members are to meet a minimum number of charitable and sponsor appearances throughout the season. They must also have a reliable means of transportation.

How many spots are available?

All returning dance team members must audition each year. There are 20 available spots, but more or less may be chosen depending on the quality of talent.

What are the judges looking for?

The judges are looking for individuals who are outgoing, energetic and dynamic performers. They are also looking for those who have the dance skills necessary to catch on to routines quickly and perform with precision. Ideal candidates are team players. They are well spoken, professional and hard working.

We are committed to a diverse, inclusive team. We welcome all individuals, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, disability, race, color, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity or any other basis prohibited by law, subject to legitimate casting objectives.

Are the auditions open to the public?

The entire audition process is closed to the public. Only applicants completing the necessary requirements to audition will be permitted to enter. New team members will be announced via at the conclusion of our finalist training camp.

Is there an age limit?

You must be at least 18 years old by June 14, 2019 in order to audition but there is not an age cap.

Is dance experience required?

You are not required to have any professional dance/cheer training or experience in order to audition; however those with dance training will likely have an advantage and be better prepared for the audition process.

Are there any height and/or weight requirements?

No. All applicants must simply fulfill the minimum age requirement.

How are the Dancers compensated?

Dancers are paid an hourly wage, including overtime when applicable, for any and all events in which they are representing the New Orleans Pelicans. This includes practices, games, appearances, dance clinics, photo shoots, etc.

Is there an audition fee?

There is no fee required to audition.

Is it possible to be a member of the Pelicans Dance Team while maintaining a full/part time job and/or going to school full/part time?

Yes! Our schedule is very demanding, but all current members work or go to school full/part time in addition to fulfilling their duties as a Pelicans Dance Team member. Joining our squad is a big commitment but if you’re passionate and dedicated it’s definitely possible…and very rewarding.

Do I have to live in the New Orleans area to be part of the Pelicans Dance Team?

It is not a requirement that you live in the New Orleans area. Each year team members drive in from Baton Rouge, Covington/Mandeville, Slidell, and even Biloxi. They often carpool to lessen the burden of the long drive. However, depending on our game schedule you may be required to drive in 5 days a week. Driving any farther than the cities listed isn’t ideal and a commute of any distance should be considered to make sure you can make that commitment.

Additional information:

Being a member of the Pelicans Dance Team is a once in a lifetime experience! It’s fun and glamorous and you’re in the middle of all the action. Along with the glitz and glamour comes a lot of late nights, long hours, and hard work. It is a job. Team members are not just dancers, they are ambassadors for our organization and the entire city. They are not only great dancers but are well spoken, outgoing, positive and hard-working individuals.

Please keep in mind that this is a significant time commitment. Practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30pm-10pm. Weekend practices will be called as needed. On occasion, practices may also be called on other weekday nights depending on the game schedule. You will be required to perform for all Pelicans home games and will also need to be available for personal appearances, photo shoots, radio/TV interviews, and other Pelicans events. On game day, you will arrive at the Smoothie King Center at least 2 and a half hours prior to tip-off, sometimes earlier if necessary. The game schedule varies from week to week. It is possible for us to have as many as 3 games a week. Please consider this carefully and make sure that you have the necessary availability to be a dedicated and reliable asset to this team.

Please make sure that you are ready to accept all responsibilities that come with this job.

Get an edge over the competition! At each Prep Class, you will learn actual choreography from last season, stretching & conditioning and receive valuable audition tips. You will also have an opportunity to ask your own questions on what it takes to become a 2019-2020 Pelicans Dance team member.

As an added bonus we’ll also teach you the actual routine that will be taught during the first round of our preliminary auditions! This is a HUGE advantage that will help you to be confident and well prepared to impress the judges. You are welcome to take as many classes as you’d like.

The basic structure of each Prep Class will be similar and the same audition choreography will be taught at each. However, sample choreography will be different at each class so that you have as much practice as possible before the big day. There are no attire requirements; just come ready to dance!

Class Fee: $40 per class; $100 for all three classes (*Limit 50 members per prep class)
