Game Recap: Pacers 131, Pistons 123

Less than 48 hours after competing in the inaugural In-Season Tournament Championship in Las Vegas, the Pacers were back to the regular season grind on Monday night in Detroit.

Monday's matchup posed a mental challenge for the Blue & Gold, who went from a week in the national spotlight playing some of the NBA's top teams and biggest stars to having to get up for a contest against a struggling Pistons team that had dropped nine straight games entering Monday.

The Pacers (13-8) passed that test with another strong performance, taking care of business in a 131-123 victory over Detroit (2-21).

Second-year guard Bennedict Mathurin led the way, putting together arguably the best all-around game of his young career. He tallied a season-high 30 points, a career-best eight assists, seven rebounds, and two steals, going 10-for-17 from the field, 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

"Benn Mathurin played one of his best games as a Pacer," head coach Rick Carlisle said after Monday's win. "We know he can score, we know he can generate points. The visual awareness and the ability to deliver the ball tonight was huge. It shows the work that he's put in and real growth."

Myles Turner added 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks, while Tyrese Haliburton recorded yet another double-double with 14 points and 16 assists.

The Pacers had the NBA's number-one offense operating at a high rate from the opening tip on Monday. Turner scored eight of Indiana's first 13 points to get them going, Haliburton dished out eight assists in the first 8:06 of the game, and the Pacers went 15-for-21 from the field (71.4 percent) in the opening quarter.

But when the Pacers weren't scoring, they were turning the ball over, committing an uncharacteristic eight giveaways in the opening frame. The Pistons scored nine points off those mistakes and star point guard Cade Cunningham tallied 13 points in the first quarter. As a result, Detroit actually led 36-33 entering the second quarter.

But the Blue & Gold quickly moved back in front, opening the ensuing frame with seven straight points. Mathurin and Buddy Hield combined for 12 straight Indiana points as the Pacers pushed the lead to 50-43.

The Pistons surged back ahead with an 18-7 run, but Indiana closed the half with nine unanswered points (five from Mathurin and four from Bruce Brown) over the final 1:42 to take a 66-61 lead into halftime.

Mathurin led all scorers with 16 points off the bench in the first half, going 7-for-11 from the field and 2-for-4 from 3-point range.

Indiana opened the half with a 9-4 run to push the lead to double digits for the first time, but Detroit immediately answered with a 12-4 spurt of its own to get back within two.

That forced a timeout from Carlisle, who used the stoppage to sub Mathurin back in. The 21-year-old picked up where he left off in the first half, immediately hitting a three and then converting a layup off a dish from Haliburton a minute later.

Shortly thereafter, Mathurin provided one of the highlights of the night. Dribbling out on the right wing, he spotted Isaiah Jackson open near the basket and quickly whipped a bullet pass with his left hand around Isaiah Livers for the bucket. Detroit called a timeout after the basket, so Mathurin's teammates mobbed him as he headed back to the bench. Haliburton was the first to greet him, jokingly covering up the second zero on Mathurin's double-zero jersey to suggest the dime was as good as any from Haliburton himself.

"I just felt it," Mathurin said, before joking about Haliburton's celebration. "It just came to my mind. It was the right play to make. Tyrese said I looked like him. I would not agree with that."

Indiana led 98-93 entering the fourth quarter. The Pistons hung around for the first half of the final frame, but the Blue & Gold eventually created separation thanks to a 10-2 run, which Haliburton capped with a stepback three and an old fashioned three-point play that stretched the lead to 129-114 with 3:31 remaining.

"This is one of the most difficult games you can have, coming off the emotions of last week, the game Saturday, the travel, everything else," Carlisle said. "I just thought our guys did a great job of staying together, keeping their composure and their aggression."

Seven Pacers finished in double figures in the victory. Hield tallied 16 points while going 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Aaron Nesmith added 13 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting (3-of-4 from beyond the arc), Brown narrowly missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine boards, and Jackson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Cunningham had a team-high 23 points on 11-of-21 shooting, six rebounds, and six assists for the Pistons, who become just the eighth team in NBA history to lose 20 consecutive games during a single season.

Rookie forward Ausar Thompson added 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, former Purdue All-American Jaden Ivey scored 18, and former Pacer Bojan Bogdanovic tallied 17 for Detroit.

The Pacers' road trip continues on Wednesday night in Milwaukee, where they will face the Bucks for the second time in a week. Indiana prevailed 128-119 on Thursday night in Las Vegas in the In-Season Tournament Semifinals.

Mathurin recorded the third 30-point game of his career and his first this season. His previous high this year was 26 points in a win over Milwaukee on Nov. 9.

Turner topped 20 points for the ninth time this season.

Haliburton, who leads the NBA in assists, has recorded a double-double in 16 of his first 19 regular season games.

The Pacers outrebounded Detroit 43-30 overall and 11-6 on the offensive glass. They outscored the Pistons 21-10 in second chance points.

Indiana's bench outscored the Pistons' reserves 61-44, with Mathurin, Nesmith, and Jackson all finishing in double figures.

The Pacers had a strong offensive night all around, topping 130 points for the 10th time this season. The Blue & Gold shot 56.5 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from 3-point range.

Mathurin's eight assists were two more than his previous career best. He had six assists at New York in the final game of his rookie season on April 9 and had dished out five assists in four previous contests, including three this season.

The Pacers will travel to Milwaukee for a rematch of last week's In-Season Tournament Semifinal against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 8:00 PM ET.

Pacers All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton was named to the 2023 NBA In-Season All-Tournament Team on Monday after leading Indiana to the Championship game of the inaugural event.

Over seven In-Season Tournament games, Haliburton averaged 26.7 points, 13.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from 3-point range. He recorded a double-double in all seven contests and registered his first career triple-double in the Pacers' win over Boston on Dec. 4 in the Quarterfinals.

Joining Haliburton on the All-Tournament Team were Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (who was named the In-Season Tournament MVP on Saturday), Lakers center Anthony Davis, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant.

The All-Tournament Team was chosen by a panel of 20 media members based on player performance in both Group Play and the Knockout Rounds. Players were chosen without regard to position.

In addition to Haliburton, Pacers center Myles Turner received one vote for the All-Tournament Team.

Haliburton Named to All-Tournament Team

After a week in the national spotlight thanks to their run to the In-Season Tournament Championship game, the Pacers (12-8) are back to the regular season grind on Monday, when they tip off a four-game road trip in Detroit against the scuffling Pistons (2-20).

The Pacers won over a lot of fans with their tournament run. They knocked off Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Monday in the Quarterfinals to advance to Las Vegas, where they ousted Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and the Los Angeles Lakers thwarted their championship hopes, however, besting Indiana in Saturday's title game, 123-109.

Tyrese Haliburton was an All-Star last year, but he's now a household name and an emerging superstar thanks to his performance in the In-Season Tournament. The 23-year-old point guard averaged 26.7 points, 13.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from 3-point range over seven IST games.

"Obviously, Tyrese Haliburton is now a name that everyone knows," Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's going to be in the conversation for a lot of things from All-Star to All-NBA to MVP based on not just this tournament, but what he's been doing every single game this year."

The Pacers now face the unique challenge of going from playing for a championship to resuming the regular season less than 48 hours later. It would seem only natural to have some degree of an emotional letdown in those circumstances, and the fact that the Blue & Gold are facing a Pistons team mired in a long losing streak will make it even more of a test for Indiana's mental fortitude.

Detroit has the worst record in the NBA and has dropped 19 straight games. The Pistons' last win came on Oct. 28 against Chicago. They haven't been especially competitive recently, either. Only one of the Pistons' last seven losses was by single digits, and that was still a nine-point defeat.

The Pistons aren't completely devoid of talent, however. Third-year guard Cade Cunningham is averaging 22 points and 7.3 assists and tallied 31 points in Detroit's first meeting with Indiana on Nov. 24. Former Purdue All-American Jaden Ivey also had 26 in that contest. The Pacers allowed 86 points in the paint to the Lakers on Saturday, an area Cunningham, Ivey, and the Pistons will try to attack early and often on Monday.

Nov. 24, 2023:&nbsp;The Pacers closed the game with a 32-9 run to beat the Pistons in an In-Season Tournament game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, 136-113. The victory secured a 4-0 record for the Pacers in Group Play and guaranteed that they would host a Quarterfinal game.

Tyrese Haliburton had been questionable for the game with a sprained right wrist and played with it heavily taped, but the All-Star guard still managed to tally a team-high 26 points and 10 assists, going 5-for-13 from 3-point range.

Myles Turner added 23 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Buddy Hield finished with 18 points in the win, Bennedict Mathurin added 15 off the bench, while Obi Toppin also tallied 15 going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.&nbsp;

Cade Cunningham led all scorers with 31 points and had five assists, going 10-for-26 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Jaden Ivey added 25 points for Detroit, while Jalen Duren recorded a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Pacers' magical run in the inaugural In-Season Tournament came to an end on Saturday night at the hands of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Blue & Gold won over the hearts of fans across the NBA with their inspired play and All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton emerged as a legitimate NBA superstar in the new event, as the Pacers ran off a 6-0 record against Eastern Conference opponents, including wins over all the top four seeds from last year's East standings to reach Saturday's Championship.

But their dreams of being the first team to hoist the NBA Cup came to an end on Saturday with a 123-109 loss to the Lakers.

Davis was dominant, tallying 41 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks while going 16-for-24 from the field and 9-for-13 from the free throw line.

Haliburton finished with another double-double, tallying 20 points and 11 assists. Second-year guard Bennedict Mathurin added 20 points off the bench in the loss, going 5-for-11 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

James continued to torment Pacers fans as he has for much of his career. After eliminating Indiana from the playoffs five times from 2012-2018 (including twice in the Eastern Conference Finals), he once again denied Indiana a championship on Saturday, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

The Pacers trailed from 9:59 in the first quarter on, but kept it close throughout the night. The Lakers stretched their lead to 11 in the third quarter, but Indiana clawed back, cutting the deficit to three twice in the fourth quarter.

The latter occasion came following Myles Turner's three to beat the shot clock, which cut the deficit to 102-99 with 6:11 remaining.

But Cam Reddish hit a three on the other end and then Davis took over to put the game away for the Lakers. The seven-time All-Star scored the next 10 points, fouling out Turner in the process. That 13-0 run closed the door on any comeback hopes, as both coaches emptied their benches in the final minute.

Davis and the Lakers owned the interior all night, outscoring Indiana 86-44 in the paint en route to victory.

"We're sick, frustrated," Haliburton said after the loss. "We just got outplayed tonight from the start of the game to the end of the game. Just didn't do the job on loose balls, didn't rebound, didn't get enough stops when needed. They just outplayed us, and it's frustrating."

The Pacers relied on the outside shot early on Saturday, as Buddy Hield, Haliburton, and Toppin each hit a 3-pointer in the opening minutes.

But on the other end, Davis had it going, scoring eight of the Lakers' first 15 points. A James layup and Taurean Prince three-point play pushed Los Angeles out to a 20-13 lead midway through the first quarter.

Davis hit his first six shots and tallied 13 points and eight rebounds in the opening frame. The Lakers remained in front through the end of the quarter, taking a 34-29 advantage into the second.

James scored eight points in the first 3:41 of the next frame to push L.A.'s lead to eight. The Pacers continued to claw away at the margin for the remainder of the quarter, but could never take the lead.

Aaron Nesmith drew an offensive foul on James with 3:19 remaining in the half. It was James' third foul of the half, so the NBA's all-time leading scorer sat out the remainder of the quarter.

The Pacers had the lead down to two twice in the final two minutes, but Austin Reaves scored the Lakers' final nine points of the half. Los Angeles outscored Indiana 52-22 in the paint over the first two quarters to take a 65-60 lead into the break.

James attacked the rim more out of the intermission, scoring five quick points on an and-one and two free throws as the Lakers opened the quarter with a 7-1 run to push the lead to double digits for the first time.

The Pacers struggled to find any rhythm offensively for much of the third quarter, making just four field goals over the first eight minutes of the frame.

They finally strung together a few buckets when Mathurin hit a deep two and then Haliburton scored on layups on two straight possessions. That 6-0 run cut  the deficit to 84-79 with two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Lakers immediately answered with six straight points of their own — including a Prince three from in front of the Lakers' bench at the 1:11 mark that was Los Angeles' first 3-pointer of the night (they had missed their first 10).

Mathurin then provided another lift for Indiana, hitting a running three at the buzzer to make it a 90-82 game entering the fourth quarter.

After a Reddish layup pushed the lead back to 10, the Pacers continued their charge early in the fourth. Mathurin attacked the rim and converted a reverse layup, Toppin knocked down a three, and then T.J. McConnell swiped a Davis inbounds pass in the backcourt and dished to a cutting Mathurin for a basket.

Just like that, the deficit was down to 92-89 with 10:30 to play.

But the Pacers were unable to get any closer the rest of the way and the Lakers eventually pulled away in the final minutes.

"It was a tough game," Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game coming in. We did a lot of good things to hang around in the fourth quarter. Getting over the hump was hard."

Nesmith had 15 points off the bench for Indiana in the loss, while Toppin added 13. Turner finished with 10 points and seven rebounds but went 3-for-11 from the field and played just 25 minutes due to foul trouble. Third-year big man Isaiah Jackson fought admirably in relief of Turner, tallying 10 points, five rebounds, and four blocks.

Reaves had 28 points off the bench for the Lakers — 20 in the first half — and went 9-for-15 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. D'Angelo Russell added 13 points and seven assists.

While it ended in disappointing fashion, it was still a special run for the Pacers and especially Haliburton. The 23-year-old guard averaged 26.7 points, 13.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from 3-point range. He received votes for In-Season Tournament MVP even though the Pacers finished as the runner-up.

"Obviously, Tyrese Haliburton is now a name that everyone knows," Carlisle said. "He's going to be in the conversation for a lot of things from All-Star to All-NBA to MVP based on not just this tournament, but what he's been doing every single game this year."

The Pacers will get right back to the regular-season grind, traveling to Detroit to open a four-game road trip on Monday. They will also play at Milwaukee, Washington, and Minnesota before returning to Indiana to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 18.

Haliburton vowed that the Pacers would use their In-Season Tournament success as a springboard into the rest of the regular season.

"We've done some great things to get here, competed against some really good teams and battled, and you can't let that happen for no reason," Haliburton said.

Saturday's Championship was not a regular season game and therefore all stats from Saturday do not count toward the season stats, a unique wrinkle.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range on Saturday. The Pacers went just 10-for-41 from beyond the arc (24.4 percent), while the Lakers were only 2-for-13 (15.4 percent). It was the first time a team made two or fewer 3-pointers and still won a game since Memphis made just two threes in a win over Detroit on Feb. 3, 2020.

The Lakers limited Haliburton to just 14 shot attempts (which would have tied his season low) and 2-for-8 3-point shooting, but the Pacers' All-Star guard still managed to record a double-double for the 16th time in 19 games this season. After tallying 28 assists with no turnovers across the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, Haliburton had three of Indiana's nine giveaways on Saturday.

Davis had four career games with 40 or more points and 20 or more rebounds entering Saturday, but had never previously achieved those stats in a game where he also blocked four shots or dished out five assists.

The Pacers committed 33 fouls, which would have been a season high. Both teams were at the free throw line frequently on Saturday, with Indiana going 29-for-33 (87.9 percent) and the Lakers going 27-for-35 (77.1 percent).

Indiana stayed in the game for much of the night in part by forcing the Lakers into 20 turnovers. The Pacers outscored Los Angeles 21-8 in points off turnovers.

The Lakers outrebounded the Pacers 55-32.

"I just want to express such a high level of pride for our guys...Our guys had an amazing run over whatever this was, five or six weeks, starting with Cleveland (on Nov. 3) and right on through. "The one thing that stands out to me is that he was completely unfazed by the limelight, and it brought his game to a higher level. Now, they committed two to him for the majority of the game, so he had to get off the ball, so his stats aren't as gaudy as they've been in other games. But he's unfazed. Like Reggie Miller, a guy that is very similar to him in body type, stature, personality, and just overall character, he wants the responsibility for winning and losing. The Lakers outscored Indiana 86-44 in points in the paint on Saturday. Interior defense has been an Achilles' heel for the Pacers throughout the season, but those 86 points in the paint were still 10 more than the Blue & Gold had allowed in any of their 20 regular season games this season.

Tyrese Haliburton buried his signature stepback three-pointer, a dagger with less than 50 seconds remaining, to lift the Pacers to a 128-119 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He finished with 27 points, 15 assists, and zero turnovers, while Myles Turner added 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pacers to the NBA's first-ever In-Season Tournament championship game.
