Game Rewind: Pacers 94, Raptors 101 (Overtime)

Game Recap

After forcing overtime against the Raptors, the Pacers were outscored 16-9 in the extra period, falling 101-94 to the team with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

After a George Hill 3-pointer knotted things up at 88 in OT, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry continued their two-man game, tallying six consecutive Toronto points, and pushing the Raptors' advantage to six.

"They made more plays," said Pacers head coach Frank Vogel after the game. "We didn't have Ian (Mahinmi) and they attacked our bigs. We couldn't contain DeRozan and Lowry in the pick-and-roll. We got some open looks and couldn't knock them down."

Lowry and DeRozan were menacing all night, combining for 56 points.

In the final moments of the fourth quarter, Monta Ellis stood on the free-throw line with 14.2 seconds remaining and his team trailing by one. The crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse stood on its feet and gasped as Ellis missed the first, then sighed with relief as he drained the second, tying the game at 85.

The Raptors had a chance to grab the win in regulation, but a jumper from DeRozan at the buzzer wouldn't fall, sending the contest into overtime.

Late in the fourth, when Indiana was in need of offense, Solomon Hill was able to find his scoring touch to help lift Indiana. First he hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put Indiana up two. Then a runner in the lane to once again extend the Pacers' advantage. Hill finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds.

But the Raptors countered by drawing fouls, pushing back into the lead, 83-81. In the fourth quarter, the Raptors were able to generate 10 free-throw attempts, connecting on nine of them.

Needing a spark, Paul George drove directly at the basket, and converted a difficult and-1, thrusting Indiana to an 84-83 lead. The bucket ignited the crowd, giving George his team-high 18th point (tied with George Hill's 18). But overtime was not kind to PG, as he went scoreless on six field goal attempts.

Following George's and-1 in regulation, DeRozan drained a step-back jumper to give the Raptors the lead once more, setting up the final moments of drama in regulation at The Fieldhouse.

When it was announced before the game that Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas would be resting, it seemed as if the Pacers might have caught a break. Unfortunately, his replacement Bismack Biyombo turned in a career-best performance, tallying an eye-popping 25 rebounds while chipping in 16 points. By the time the fourth quarter began, Biyombo had already racked up 22 rebounds.

"Bismack was great, he was a monster," DeRozan said, "going up against their whole front line."

The Pacers limited the Raptors to just 43 points in the first half, including a 16-point second quarter. But Indiana struggled to generate offense as well, going into the break leading by just three, thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from George Hill.

In the third quarter, the Raptors stifled the Pacers, holding the Blue & Gold to 14 points and taking a 63-60 lead into the fourth quarter.

But despite trailing to start the final quarter of action, Indiana pulled in front, 71-70, with 6:45 remaining in the contest. On an inbounds play, Monta Ellis was able to find George in the corner, who hit a 3-pointer to push the Pacers' lead to four, and lift the St. Patrick's Day-clad crowd to its feet.

The score triggered a Raptors timeout, with the Pacers doubling Toronto's scoring in the fourth quarter to the tune of 14-7 with 6:17 remaining.

The Raptors clawed back from there, forcing the overtime and eventually pulling away from the Pacers in the extra frame.

Presently, Indiana would face the Raptors if the season were to end today. Although the game ended as a loss for the Blue & Gold, the overtime battle gave a preview of what could be an exciting series between the two teams, should they eventually meet in the postseason.

Inside the Numbers

The loss dropped Indiana to 1-7 in overtime contests this season.

Bismack Biyombo's 25 rebounds (9 offensive) still didn't top the high for a Pacers opponent this season. Andre Drummond had 29 rebounds (11 offensive) during a Pacers win in November.

Paul George made 1-of-9 3-point field goal attempts.

The Raptors' 30 made free throws tied a season-high for a Pacers' opponent. The Heat made 30 during a January 4th game that went to overtime as well.

You Can Quote Me On That

"They're a very good basketball team, they've been playing very good basketball. I think our defense won the game for us. Bismack (Biyombo), 25 rebounds. If we had one more guy to help us rebound, we'd be in good shape. But he did a hell of a job on the boards." -Raptors Coach Dwane Casey

"We definitely needed another big out there. His presence was missed a little but we still have more than enough … It was a team rebounding effort and we didn't do a good enough job." -Paul George on missing Ian Mahinmi, who was out with a sore lower back

"You can't get any rhythm going and it's frustrating. It messes with your head a little bit, but anytime your number is called you have to be out there and ready to go." -Myles Turner on dealing with early foul trouble

Noteworthy

  • Ian Mahinmi missed the game with a sore lower back. He was listed as doubtful
  • Ty Lawson was available but did not play. Coach Vogel said he would like to see Lawson have one more practice before playing in a game after spraining his foot against the Spurs
  • Myles Turner dealt with foul trouble, only playing three minutes in the first half after picking up three fouls
  • Shayne Whittington, who was recalled from Fort Wayne today, played four minutes

Stat of the Night

The Pacers lost despite holding the Raptors to 36 percent shooting. The last Pacers opponent to win shooting 36 percent or less was the Hornets in January of 2015, when Charlotte won 80-71 in OT.
