Game Preview: Pacers vs Grizzlies

After returning from their four-day break with a thrilling victory over the Orlando Magic, the Pacers (9-6) are set to take on the Memphis Grizzlies (5-10) for the first time this season on Monday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Grizzlies squad, which features a roster consisting of 10 players with two or fewer years of NBA experience, are looking to end a three-game losing skid after falling just short against the Los Angeles Lakers, 109-108, on Saturday night.

Memphis is led by the sensational rookie from Murray State, Ja Morant. Morant, who was selected second overall in the 2019 NBA draft, is averaging 21.4 points over his last five games to boost his season-long scoring average to 19.1 points per game. He leads all rookies in scoring. Against the Lakers, he recorded 26 points, six assists, and a franchise rookie record-tying five steals. He became the first rookie to tally at least 25 points, five assists, and five steals in a game since John Wall did it for the Washington Wizards on Nov. 2, 2010.

Meanwhile, Indiana is getting a major spark thanks to the Holiday brothers. Playing in relief of the injured Malcolm Brogdon, Aaron Holiday has averaged 16.0 points in his last three starts at the point guard position. Holiday secured Indiana's victory over the Magic with a clutch 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds remaining.

Aaron's older brother, Justin, has been a spark off the bench. The former Grizzlies forward has scored in double figures in three of his last four games. On November 18 against the Brooklyn Nets, he scored a season-high 20 points. He gathered in the offensive rebound and found his brother on the right elbow for the assist on the game-winning 3-pointer against the Magic.

In addition, the Blue & Gold are slowly becoming healthy once again. Both T.J McConnell and Jeremy Lamb returned from their injures and played significant minutes against the Magic and Brodgon is set to return on Monday.

Last Meeting

January 26, 2019: The Pacers fell to the Grizzlies 106-103 at FedEx Forum behind Mike Conley’s 22 points and 11 assists. It was the first game played after Victor Oladipo suffered his season ending quad injury. Bojan Bogdanovic led all Indiana scorers with 21 points, and Darren Collison added 18 and nine assists.

The Pacers used a 14-3 run with 3:15 left in the third quarter to tie the game, 67-67, after trailing by 11. But Oladipo's offensive prowess was missed, as the Grizzlies began an 11-2 run to head into the fourth with a 78-69 lead. Though the Pacers closed the deficit to three points, Memphis rattled off an 11-1 run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

"We’re just trying as a team to find ourselves without Victor Oladipo," Pacers forward Thaddeus Young said. "That's one of the biggest things. Our offense was a little stagnant as opposed to having Victor out there. That's no excuse."

  • The Pacers lead the all-time regular season series, 28-18.
  • Grizzlies forward/center Jaren Jackson Jr. started his high school basketball career with Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. He then transferred to La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. for his senior year.
  • This will be the first time Justin Holiday will play against his former team. Holiday was traded to Memphis from Chicago on Jan. 3 and played 44 games for the Grizzlies last season.
  • Grizzlies forward Solomon Hill was drafted by Indiana with the 23rd overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He appeared in 169 games over his first three NBA seasons and averaged 6.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 20.6 minutes with the Pacers.
