Matchup

After a quick trip to Chicago, the Pacers (24-15) are back at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Monday night to host the Philadelphia 76ers (25-15) in a pivotal Eastern Conference matchup.

Indiana enters Monday's meeting in sixth place in the East standings, just a half-game back of Philadelphia. The two teams have split a pair of meetings so far this season, with each team winning on its home court.

The Pacers have been shorthanded in recent weeks, but are hopeful they will be healthier in time for Monday. Starting point guard Malcolm Brogdon missed three games with a hamstring injury, returned for the last meeting against the Sixers on Dec. 31 only to exit after injuring his back in the first quarter, then missed four more contests. He was supposed to return to the lineup on Friday in Chicago, only to come down with strep throat the day of the game.

Brogdon should finally be back for Monday's contest and hopefully can avoid the injury list for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, star forward Domantas Sabonis is questionable for Monday's game after missing Friday's contest with a sore knee. The 6-11 Lithuanian double-double machine currently leads the Blue & Gold in both scoring (18 points per game) and rebounding (13.1 per contest) and is making a strong case for his first All-Star selection.

Injuries have also impacted the 76ers. All-NBA center Joel Embiid missed the New Year's Eve matchup against the Pacers due to knee soreness, then sustained a nasty injury to his left ring finger last Monday against Oklahoma City. Embiid returned and finished that contest, but subsequent tests revealed that he tore a ligament in his finger and had to undergo surgery, which is expected to keep him sidelined for at least a couple weeks.

Without Embiid's 23.4 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, the 76ers will rely more heavily on 6-9 All-Star point guard Ben Simmons. Simmons is fourth in the NBA in assists, dishing out 8.5 per game, but will be asking to increase his scoring load in Embiid's absence. Despite his lack of an outside shot, Simmons is one the NBA's elite driving threats, as evidenced by his .561 field goal percentage.

Projected Starters

Pacers: PG - T.J. McConnell, SG - Jeremy Lamb, SF - T.J. Warren, PF - JaKarr Sampson, C - Myles Turner
76ers: PG - Ben Simmons, SG - Josh Richardson, SF - Tobias Harris, PF - Mike Scott, C - Al Horford

Injury Report

Pacers: Malcolm Brogdon - questionable (strep throat), Domantas Sabonis - questionable - sore (left knee), Naz Mitrou-Long - out (right ankle sprain), Victor Oladipo - out (right knee surgery rehab)

76ers: Joel Embiid - out (torn radial collateral ligament in left hand)

Last Meeting

December 31, 2019: Indiana closed out 2019 in emphatic fashion, rolling to a 115-97 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Pacers led by as many as 36 points in the victory, putting the game away by the end of the third quarter. Domantas Sabonis led the Pacers with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while T.J. Warren scored all 21 of his points in the first half.

"We executed really well on both ends of the floor," said Pacers forward Doug McDermott, who tallied 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. "Shared it, I think we had 21 assists in the first half. When we're playing unselfish, it's usually when we're playing our best basketball."

Josh Richardson led Philadelphia with 20 points in the loss. Ben Simmons finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists, but also had six turnovers.

Noteworthy

  • The Pacers and 76ers conclude their regular season series on March 14 in Philadephia.
  • Indiana has three former 76ers on its roster: Justin Holiday (2013), T.J. McConnell (2015-19), and JaKarr Sampson (2014-16).
  • Philadelphia's roster features Kyle O'Quinn, who played for the Pacers last season.
