Kyrylo Fesenko will join the Chicago Bulls and compete for a roster spot as the team opens training camp next week, according to reports. The 7-foot-1 center was in Chicago Monday to work out for team officials and is expected to sign a non-guaranteed contract this week.
The agreement was first reported by ESPN.com.
Fesenko signed with the Pacers in late March as a just-in-case big, and potentially a defensive presence in the playoffs. Center Jeff Foster was out and needed back surgery, ending his season and ultimately, his career. Fesenko, who was more of a practice player than a solid backup, didn’t dress for the majority of games.
Last season, he only played in three games with the Pacers, tallying eight points and nine rebounds in just 17 minutes total. The 25-year-old Ukrainian spent his first four seasons with the Utah Jazz.
Chicago hopes Fesenko sticks and can add to their frontcourt. Omer Asik signed an offer sheet with Houston this summer worth $25 million and the Bulls elected not to match. Fesenko would potentially backup Joakim Noah and Nazr Mohammed.
Due to salary cap restrictions, reports indicate that Fesenko would not be able to sign a contract for the veteran minimum until November. But first, he must impress in camp.
