Can You Explain the Playoff Format?

This is the third season that NBA has implemented Play-In Tournament for the 2020-21 season to determine the final two Playoff seeds in each conference. Here's how it works:

  • The teams that finish in the top six in each conference at the conclusion of the regular season automatically advance to the first round of the playoffs.
  • The teams that finish seventh and eighth in their conference will play one game, with the winner advancing to the playoffs as the seventh seed (and facing the second seed in a best-of-seven first-round series).
  • The teams that finish ninth and 10th in their conference will play one game, with the loser being eliminated from the playoff contention.
  • The loser of the seventh/eighth-place game will play the winner of the ninth/10th-place game. The winner of that game will advance to the playoffs as the eighth seed (and face the top seed in a best-of-seven first-round series), while the loser is eliminated.
